DONCASTER NAP HUB OF A TEN-HOUR RACING DAY: Today Daqman completes his week of checking out the two-year-old contests. From almost 10 hours of racing, he finds a nap at Doncaster tonight. Today’s headlines:
🔹 KEEP CLEAR OF HORSES WITH NO KICK!
🔹 WINDRACER WHISPER FOR SILVER FLASH
🔹 23 DOUBLES AND TREBLES IN FIVE DAYS
KEEP CLEAR OF HORSES WITH NO KICK!
There’s nearly 10 hours of racing today. It starts so early you may not have read this column before 11.25 a.m, to which I say ‘lucky me’; I don’t have to try to find a winner among the unhappy band of losers in a chase that’s a merry-go-round the Southwell bends.
And I don’t think I’ll be hanging around at Leopardstown until the lucky last at 9 pm. But somewhere in between there must be something to tempt us.
I’ve been keeping my stakes and targets low after the big-race weekend, despite a good run of returns, because short prices in small fields demand stakes out of proportion to the real chance of horses you can’t trust.
I’ve said it in this column at least three times a year for 12 years and I wrote a whole book about it way back when (‘Horse Sense’): don’t bet big below class 3; the horses are running at that low level because they rarely, if ever, deliver. If they do, they need a long time between races.
They are not athletes with quality and kick but, generally, unlovely creatures doing a job of work (just like me). Today let’s try to find a bit of class among the two-year-olds in the seven cards today. At least we can expect to get our money back in the future if we follow the best potential.
WINDRACER WHISPER FOR SILVER FLASH
1.45 Sandown Let’s start with five races for two year olds. Any class we spot here is with an eye to the future. I’ve started collecting two-year-olds bred to do well but needing a run (see Horses To Follow in Tuesday’s column). This race could yield one or two.
Kameko and Star of Wells are Derby 2020 entries; No Show is aimed at the 2yo Sales sprints; and Unresolved is a Frankel. This last pair are with stables enjoying a great run with its juveniles, and No Show needs to win this to be a contender for those six-figure prizes. I took 6.4.
2.15 Sandown All two-year-old fillies; all winners already going for some early black type in this Listed test.
West End Girl got Golden Horn off the mark as a sire and, with her dam’s sire, Dansili, could quickly take a step forward, though easy to back at 10.5 early mouse, 3.1 in the place market.
5.50 Leopardstown Ger Lyons has had 10-23 (that’s 43%) juvenile winners, and this column was on the last one to win first time out in a maiden: French Rain scored comfortably at the Curragh on Sunday and went into that Horses To Follow list.
As a yearling, Auxilia made four times her price as a foal, and her sire, Free Eagle, won first time of asking: 3.8 says Auxilia will, too.
6.20 Leopardstown Ballydoyle colts Yankee Stadium, Cormorant and Cabot Hills are all entered in the Derby. Yankee Stadium (2.86 on BETDAQ) is the one entered up in the big two-year-old tests, so likely to be the precocious player.
6.55 Leopardstown (Silver Flash Stakes) Aidan O’Brien’s six winners of this in the decade have included Happily, Maybe and Wonderfully, all subsequent winners of the Moyglare.
Love, Precious Moments and So Wonderful are all Moyglare targeted this time while Ger Lyons (One Last Look) fields another first-time winner.
But the one whispered to me by my man in the long grass is Windracer of Jessica Harrington’s, 4.5 early mouse on BETDAQ.
This one pipped Love a neck in a big field at the Curragh at the end of last month but in fact won readily, a bit of a shock to the O’Brien 11-10 favourite.
Precious Moments already has class in her form, as well as in her pedigree (she’s a Gleneagles) having finished fifth in the Albany at Royal Ascot and gone down just half a length to Albigna at the Curragh.
But Albigna is from the same Jessica Harrington yard as Windracer and, if you look at the early markets for the 1,000 Guineas, you’ll find they both figure prominently. Aidan O’Brien is not having his own way with juveniles so far this year.
23 DOUBLES AND TREBLES IN FIVE DAYS
Don’t forget your Daq Multiples. In my sequence of 12 winners in the last five days, you could have had 16 doubles up and seven trebles, including one at 255-1 on Saturday and one worth 139-1 on Tuesday.
2.50 Sandown Frankie Dettori’s last two rides for Mark Johnston have been top two-year-old Raffle Prize in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (old Cherry Hinton) at the July Meeting and Vale Of Kent the following day in the Bunbury Cup at the same festival.
Now Mark asks him to do his famous front-running act on 4.9 BETDAQ offer Summer Moon in the Young Stayers’ Handicap this afternoon.
Stablemate Fraser Island upsets my plans a bit. I had a cracking outsider at 18.0 yesterday but the stable ran two, and a saver on ‘the other one’ ate up some of my place profits for finishing second. I’ll stick my head on the block for Frankie today but prefer to nap at Doncaster tonight.
6.50 Doncaster Sir Michael Stoute’s halo is slipping at Doncaster. He’s sent up a lone raider at each of the last two Town Moor meetings. Both lost in the last fortnight (fourth and second).
Today the track’s top trainer with a 36% strike rate again runs just the one. Arctic Ocean, who set herself up for a hat-trick tonight by winning on the last day.. at Doncaster!
Jimmy Quinn is 2-2 on Arctic Ocean. No other jockey has won on her, and Jimmy has no other rides anywhere else today. Around even money as the hub for your multiples today.
NEXT WEEK: I shall nominate ton-up trebles and other Daq Multiples in the fantastic week of a famous double act, Galway (Monday to Sunday) and Goodwood (Tuesday to Saturday).
