SEE HOW THEY WON: CHAMPIONS MILE: Daqman continues his probe into the stats and facts to help with the five championship races at Ascot on Saturday. Today, the Mile. But with a weather warning.

CHURCHILL DROPS BACK TO MILE

Any preview of Ascot on Saturday must now start with a weather warning that wind and rain of near-storm proportions is forecast.

3.15 Ascot (Saturday) Queen Elizabeth II British Champions Mile From Tudor Minstrel (1947) to Brigadier Gerard (1971) and Frankel (2011) this Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes has truly been a race of superstar milers.

Dominated in recent years by Aidan O’Brien (four winners since 2006, including last year with Minding), who has switched Churchill from the Champion Stakes.

Though three-year-olds have won it 29 times since Brigadier Gerard, and taken seven of the last nine, Richard Fahey’s Ribchester, currently heads the market after his Lockinge, Queen Anne and Prix Du Moulin treble, was trying to give the recent race six winning favourites out of eight.

But now three of the first four in the Newmarket Guineas will take part, Churchill (1st), Al Wukair (3rd) and Churchill’s stablemate, Lancaster Bomber (4th).

The only winner among the three since the Curragh and Newmarket Guineas is Al Wukair in the Jacques Le Marois, another Group-1 mile race in France in August.

But it was a major feat of jockeyship by Frankie Dettori, the kinky Fabre colt even trying to bite his stablemate and runner-up, Inns Of Court, as they battled to the line at Deauville.

The Jean Prat winner, Thunder Snow, was third, beaten a short-head and a short-neck for Saeed Bin Suroor, who has won this champions’ Mile twice since 2007.

Dettori is now likely to ride Persuasive for John Gosden, whose Raven’s Pass scored in 2008. But Persuasive, a Group-3 winner at best, is also four years old.

ULYSSES: Ulysses is now a non-runner in the Champion Stakes.

BUY OFFERS OVER THE COUNTER

2.55 Uttoxeter The odds-on Cause Toujours may well frank the form of the Cheltenham champion bumper (the winner Fayonagh strolled home the other day).

And the Charlie Longsdon stable, which does well at this track, challenges with an Oscar gelding, Monty’s Award. But there’s one I can cover with a place insurance against the wins odds of 5.4, Counter Shy.

I promised myself I would follow Counter Shy, who has a very special breeding (by Galileo out of a Flemensfirth mare), special to no one more than his trainer, Jonjo O’Neill, who handled the dam, a relative of his Gold Cup winner, Synchronised.

3.25 Uttoxeter Secret Door (4.2 on BETDAQ early mouse) has that mix of breeding that appeals in Cause Toujours, in that her sire was a Group winner on the Flat (won the Great Voltigeur) and the dam – by Saddlers Hall – was a 3m hurdle winner.

She gets 9lb from No Hassle Hoff, who is dropped from Graded level after becoming a bit of a bridesmaid (form of 3224 and has only won his maiden, so often a bad sign). Saver.

PENALTIES HAND IT TO ROCCO

4.10 Punchestown This Grade-3 chase looks a gimme for Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up, Minella Rocco, who gets up to 10lb here under the penalty conditions of the race. A cross-the-sea double for Jonjo after Counter Shy?

On all known form, the 3m 1f looks a trip too far for Sub lieutenant and, similarly, Road To Respect’s 3m form is 000, hurdles and fences, while Outlander’s jumping is seldom reliable enough to warrant a bet. So 3.15 Minella Rocco looked like BETDAQ value.

4.50 Carlisle Evan Williams, who is 50% with both chasers and hurdlers on this course, and is in form from a double on Saturday, sends three up from Welsh Wales including Report To Base, 5.6 on BETDAQ in this one.

Beau Bay, Elusive Theatre and Santykay already have steeplechase experience but Report To Base was much the best over hurdles, and goes well fresh.

The five-year-old, a Westerner, was the moral, giving weight to the winner, when second at Cheltenham to the subsequent close-up fourth in the Martin Pipe at the festival.
