THREE FOR THURSDAY: The quality meter dips today with just three cards from Ayr, Huntingdon and Newcastle. Daqman tries to find a winner from each venue.
THERE MAYBE TROUBLE AHEAD: Inclement weather forecasts have forced inspections at Musselburgh and Lingfield on Friday. It potentially could leave just the all-weather card at Southwell as the only venue.
NAP LOOKS ALRIGHT
⭕ 1.40 Ayr A huge field of 19 go to post for this handicap hurdle on soft ground but it might not be as competitive as the numbers first indicate.
Alright Dai is taken to follow up on last week’s easy Market Rasen win as he looked much improved for the first time cheekpieces and could now be a well handicap horse for trainer Neil Mulholland who has his yard ticking over nicely.
We didn’t get the usual benefit of comments in running for the Market Rasen success due to the fog but he was well in command on the run-in and only had to be pushed out to record a six length win.
There’re a lot here who are struggling for form and the biggest danger to the likely Betdaq Betting Exchange favourite is Cave Hill who is also a last time out winner.
However, his success came on good ground at Newcastle and his form to date in more testing conditions is less than convincing.
THE OUTSIDERS OF FIVE
⭕ 2.35 Huntingdon From one extreme to the other for this five runner handicap chase which is fairly tightly banded (ratings 112 to 119) and I didn’t think there is much to choose between any of the quintet.
Naturally, in such a case, I am therefore looking at the bigger priced runners and the outsider of them all Laskalin, trained by Venetia Williams, is by no means out of it – he’s the only previous winner over this trip and might just find this easier after being being tried at generally higher levels.
His Hereford third just before Christmas might have been closer but for sprawling at the second last and losing all momentum and the combination of the drop in trip and a three pound tumble from the handicapper are both positives.
I’ll also include Mystery Bere who has been campaigned over shorter distances and is generally consistent. He was staying on to good effect at Huntingdon (2m 4f) last time out suggesting the further distance might be right up his street.
MY HOBBY HORSE
⭕ 6.10 Newcastle The final port of call but it’s low grade action throughout tonight’s card at Gosforth Park.
Cloch Nua is rated the best of these but ratings can be unreliable at this lowly level and with him I am more concerned that he has needed the run after previous absences.
Martin’s Brig is a dual course and distance winner but his form has woefully tailed off.
Yaahobby might be the simple answer to a complex puzzle. He holds the mare Elettaria on course form from last October and might be able to confirm that form over an extra furlong.
It’s actually surprising that he hasn’t been campaigned over this mile trip more often as he certainly hasn’t been stopping when successful in seven furlongs events.
