LEGER RATINGS AND BETDAQ OFFERS
⭕ 3.33 Doncaster (St Leger), Saturday, September 10
116 HOO YA MAL (BETDAQ 11.0) Has won only his maiden; always a bad sign. Five races since (23223), all missing strike from 7f to 1m 4f, also a bad sign. Hood fitted for six starts by George Boughey replaced with tongue-tie under new trainer Andrew Balding.
Runner-up at Epsom, splitting the Derby winner that day, Desert Crown, and the Irish Derby winner-to-be, Westover, he’s been bought for £1.2m to run in the Melbourne Cup under the care of Gai Waterhouse.
109 ELDAR ELDAROV (BETDAQ 7.0) Hat-trick culminating (led final stride) in defeat of Zechariah in the Queens Vase (1m 6f) in fast time at Royal Ascot but only fourth, back in trip, for the Grand Prix de Paris (1m 4f); soon beaten. The Queens Vase has produced three St Leger winners in the decade.
109 NEW LONDON (BETDAQ 1.61) Chester Vase runner-up dropped back to handicap company to win on the July Course but kept on strongly to capture the Gordon Stakes (Group 3) at Goodwood, with the third home, Hoo Ya Mal (jockey dropped whip and no extra finish).
The runner-up in the Goodwood race, Deauville Legend, boosted the form by winning the Great Voltigeur at York from a second Charlie Appleby probable runner in the Leger, Secret State (see below).
109 UNITED NATIONS (BETDAQ 15.0) Only fourth in the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom and reputation relies on Listed win for four-horse Lingfield Derby Trial, when Zechariah (outpaced) was fourth.
108 FRENCH CLAIM (BETDAQ 26.0) Third in Leopardstown Derby Trial, which has not worked out. Third again, nine lengths off the winner, Westover, in the Irish Derby.
108 ZECHARIAH (BETDAQ 9.0) Beat Westover as a two-year-old. Headed final stride by Eldar Eldarov in the Queens Vase at Royal Ascot but kept on strongly to beat Listed-level Universal Order at Newbury.
104 BLUEGRASS (BETDAQ 17.0) Fourth in the Ballysax, third in the Dante behind subsequent Derby winner Desert Crown but, weakened final furlong, only fourth stepped up to 1m 6f in the Vinnie Roe at Leopardstown.
103 EMILY DICKINSON (BETDAQ 21.0) Has won only her maiden, always a bad sign. Short-headed by Rosscarbery (subsequent Jean Romanet runner-up) over 1m 6f at Leopardstown when in receipt of 17lb.
100 ANCHORAGE (BETDAQ 66.0) Handicap winner last October; placed 1m 1f after. Failed to reach the frame since (fifth in Queens Vase to Eldar Eldarova).
100 SECRET STATE (BETDAQ 9.0) Progressive in handicaps, winning King George V at Royal Ascot as part of four in a row, but well beaten stepped up to Group 2 in Great Voltigeur at York. Second string to New London.
100 WATERVILLE (BETDAQ 34.0) Failed to break his maiden (3232) but got off the mark over 2m 1f in Leopardstown handicap and good second to Listed winner since.
097 GIAVELLOTTO (BETDAQ 34.0) Progressive in handicaps, winner over 1m 6f on the July Course. Lot to prove.
088 LIZZIE JEAN (BETDAQ 100.0) Class-4 AW handicap winner,; never raced on turf.
ANGEL DELIGHT
⭕ 3.10 Carlisle Barefoot Angel was nibbled at in the market ahead of her first run at Ripon and at the time her six length second to Swingalong was filed under the ‘promising debut’ category.
However that can be seriously upgraded given the winner went on to spring a 25/1 surprise by winning the Group 2 Lowther stakes at York last week.
It’s a confident vote to say she won’t bump into one like that here and with normal first to second start improvement I think she looks a decent bet in this company.
I’m not sure Reward Smile improved too much at Hamilton last time from a well beaten York third on debut and River Naver could be a bigger danger as she will surely come on plenty from her Newmarket debut when running particularly green.
JEMIL DIFFERENT LEAGUE
⭕ 7.45 Newcastle Just nine runners now for this Racing League race which throws up a good bet on Betdaq Betting Exchange in the shape of Zaman Jemil who has improved in both starts since finishing down the field on his Salisbury debut.
He’s gone on to finish fourth at Doncaster and then was just denied by a head at Pontefract last time out in what ended up being a dodgem cars finish with plenty of bumping in the closing stages.
Further improvement looks likely and a starting mark of 76 in nurseries doesn’t look too onerous.
The obvious danger has to be recent Beverley winner Minnesota Lad who should be suited by the step up in trip from five furlongs to six.
STANDING PROUD
⭕ 8.45 Newcastle A hugely competitive finale – 5/1 the field on Betdaq in mid-morning trading.
Jim Goldie’s Be Proud needs to return to form for the switch back to the all-weather but he is a multiple winner here and is in much calmer waters tonight.
His latest run at Sandown was better than it looked at the time. He finished 8th of 11 runners in a class 3 but was only beaten three lengths and also found trouble in running.
