My Grand National bet will never give up. At least that’s the impression from Mount Ida’s Kim Muir victory at Cheltenham in March.
At the same time it is a reminder that the punter with a spare couple of pound in his wallet should also adopt a never-say-die attitude.
Keep a record of your bets; judge carefully what you are prepared to lose and whether you are getting value about the horse you bet on.
But, if the animal is a stayer seemingly struggling out the back, don’t give up hope.. have another pound or two in running, particularly if the offers are 999-1.
Mount Ida, at 3-1 favourite, was trailing the field coming down the Cheltenham hill in the Kim Muir in March and, with all chance seemingly gone, offers shot through the roof to the 1,000.0 max.
The rest, as they say, is history. The race-report is full of understatement: ‘Held up in rear; steady headway; went clear when ridden; best work at finish.’
I should have said in my ante-post story yesterday that Mount Ida has since run – and won – her most recent race in an entirely different way – ‘disputed lead, clear two out’ – over a much shorter (yes, shorter) trip at Clonmel in November.

JEREMY’S NOT FOR PASSING
⭕ 2.10 Taunton Paul Nicholls hasn’t had a runner since Monday, when he’d had 13 winners in nine racing days.
He has five chances 30-odd miles down the road from Ditcheat today including Jeremy Pass in this near-3m novices’ chase. But you have to keep a weather-eye open.
Jeremy is a great jumper but was a bridesmaid over hurdles, not sound in his wind; chasing gives him more time, and he’s had a wind op. Heavy ground wouldn’t help.
Lord Accord also prefers good ground and the Uttoxeter winner has to give 6lb and more to all bar Organdi, who doesn’t just want good ground; by all accounts, he wants it on the firm side.
Winds Of Fire beat a previous winner when they were left alone in front at Newcastle, but I’m taking the risk on Jeremy Pass at..

His runner this year, Mobashr, moves up from a lower level, so impressive when scoring at Lingfield late last month, travelling powerfully to beat Wonder Elmossman, who followed up 10 days later by scoring at Wolverhampton (‘soon clear’).
In his last turf race, at Windsor in June, Mobashr turned over an even-money gamble who landed a hat-trick in the autumn, climbing 13lb to class 2.
