BACK-TO-BACK NAPS IN DAQMAN ASSAULT: Daqman made it back-to-back best bets with a supernap yesterday, giving him three consecutive days of success starting on Bank Holiday Monday. They included a Wednesday double from just three bets:
WON 5-1 CARLTON FRANKIE (from 12.5 BETDAQ, Monday)
WON 7-4 DESERT FROST (nap, Tuesday)
WON 4-7 QUE AMORO (supernap, Wednesday)
WON 3-1 REBEL ASSAULT (26 points up on Wednesday)
LUCKY 13 TWO-YEAR-OLDS TO FOLLOW
The Solario is the turning point. That’s Saturday’s 7f two-year-old test at Sandown Park, start of a season of juvenile trials of stamina.
Up to York in August you can expect to find the Guineas winner to be thrown up from the shorter contests among the more precocious youngsters.
After August, with juvenile events over further for colts and (particularly) fillies needing more time to develop, you can start looking for the Derby and Oaks winners.
Here are my ratings for the top 13 two-year-olds seen so far (with their stable and official rating in brackets):
116 CALYX (John Gosden 114) Coventry Stakes winner; Advertise second
116 PRETTY POLLYANNA (Michael Bell, 117) won Prix Morny from Signora Cabello
115 SIGNORA CABELLO (John Quinn 115) won Queen Mary, Robert Papin
114 ADVERTISE (Martyn Meade 112) won July Stakes, Phoenix Stakes (So Perfect second)
112 QUORTO (Charlie Appleby 114) Newmarket (July) winner
112 SERGEI PROKOFIEV (Aidan O’Brien 110) third Coventry Stakes
112 SO PERFECT (Aidan O’Brien 109) Fourth Queen Mary, second Phoenix
111 ANTHONY VAN DYCK (Aidan O’Brien 112) won Tyros Stakes, Curragh Futurity
111 SKITTER SCATTER (Patrick Prendergast 102) second to So Perfect, winner Debutante Stakes
110 LAND FORCE (Aidan O’Brien 110) won Richmond Stakes, fourth Prix Morny
109 THE IRISH ROVER (Aidan O’Brien -) behind Coventry, third Phoenix
108 DARK VISION (Mark Johnston 113) won Vintage Stakes, Goodwood
105 FAIRYLAND (Aidan O’Brien 105) won Lowther Stakes
SOLID AS A ROCK
3.00 Chelmsford Small fields are very much the order of the day at Chelmsford and it would be no surprise to see National Hunt winning distances in some of the races.
That said, this three runner class handicap looks very tricky with the BETDAQ market having them at 2.1, 3.8 and 3.9 at the time of writing. Take your pick.
I think High Command would be a lot bigger in the market but for Ryan Moore jocked up. The Gary Moore trained runner has recorded both his career successes at Southwell and has struggled so far this year on the all-weather surfaces at Kempton and Newcastle and finished last of 13 last time out. He looks out of love with the game at the moment.
There are question marks too about current favourite Gripper who was a beaten favourite at Lingfield last time out and is now up in both class and distance. He remains a maiden and whilst one of his better races was run on the all-weather at Kempton, he seemed to struggle in the closing stages of that 1m 3f contest and has a full extra three furlongs to cover today.
That would leave Precision as the selection by default. Although he was last of four here just two days ago – it was over a longer trip and he wasn’t beaten far – so we know we have the stamina box ticked and that’s all that might be needed to land this.
Like plenty from the Mark Johnston stable he’s been kept busy and is back to the trip he won over last year on the turf.
3.30 Chelmsford Class 2 race for fillies very much the standout of the day but again it’s a small field of four to contend with.
It looks much easier than the previous race though as Rock On Baileys looks to have a great chance.
He needs to bounce back from a poor run at Pontefract last time out but that was in Listed company and he’s a very good horse here at Chelmsford.
A reproduction of his second to Lucymai over course and distance earlier this month in a £50,000 handicap ought to be good enough.
Dean Ivory’s Eirene went wrong in the Stewards’ Cup and was pulled up, so needs a watching brief today whilst Hells Babe and Inshiraah are class droppers but generally unreliable.
3.40 Carlisle Dream Poet looks vulnerable with top weight following a narrow win at Beverley.
Stronsay was another last time out winner but on ground softer than expected today.
Preference is for Illusions who was fourth in much better company at Haydock last time out and doesn’t look harshly treated on handicap debut.
