THE FILLIES ST LEGER TODAY: A tricky start to the Doncaster St Leger meeting today with no fewer than five two-year-old races, three of them nurseries. The feature of the afternoon is the Group-2 Park Hill Stakes, nicknamed the fillies’ St Leger but open to three and four year olds.
DATE WITH CALENDAR GIRL
⭕ 1.50 Doncaster A sales race for 2yo worth £216,000 to the winner is Christophe Soumillon’s first as deputy dawg for Ryan Moore.
But it’s not a race Aidan O’Brien wins, nor has his contender, Brussels, shown – in a Group 2 at Newmarket and a Listed at Tipperary – the finish that’s needed for a speed struggle like this.
O’Brien had a higher-rated runner last year, Camille Pissarro, but he was beaten favourite.
The year before, he had one short-priced and first home in his group but they were drawn down the near side, when low numbers taking the centre ground won out.
Winners by stall since 2017, with one high number four years back: 3, 3, 1, 3, (15), 7, 1, 9.
That guides me to Calendar Girl (stall 6), who kept on well at Epsom, beaten threeparts of a length, trying to give 7lb to a subsequent winner. BETDAQ 6.5 taken.
I’m hoping that subsequent winner, Just Call Me Angel, is also an indicator to the May Hill, having been 10 lengths behind Aylin at Goodwood.
HAS AYLIN BEEN BOOSTED?
⭕ 2.25 Doncaster (May Hill Stakes) Karl Burke, who has the top 2yo filly, Venetian Sun, among his 50 or more 2yo winners, relies on Aylin to give him a third May Hill, boosted by the opening sales race. BETDAQ 6.4 taken.
Moon Target and Aylin were placed in the Prestige at Goodwood won by Aidan O’Brien, who now saddles Sugar Island, beaten favourite on firm ground at the Curragh, but will appreciate cut today, needing a fast pace.
Rose Ghaiyyath was brilliantly placed by Richard Hughes to bag £66,000 at Deauville in August, first time up, though the form may not amount to much, as they finished in a heap.
ZILFEE COULD BE ANYTHING
⭕ 3.00 Doncaster (Park Hill Stakes) Second-season fillies have won five in a row and they all line up on a par with previous winning ratings, whereas the four-year-olds are below the 105 and 113 of the most recent scorers, with the exception of Danielle (106).
She is trained by Team Gosden, winners of this four times in the decade, and has placed on a similar level in Group 3, Listed and Group 2 consecutively on the soft.
Crepe Suzette has also had a hat-trick of seconds, yet shot up 21lb. Though her form is Listed at best, she did better when second in the Galtres at York than a previous Park Hill winner for the Gosdens.
And a third Gosden contender today, Colin Keane’s only mount booked in advance, Zilfee is a half-sister to Enable and a lovely mover who could be anything.
Floresta has pleased Johnny Murtagh at home since winning at Leopardstown and Sir Mark Prescott’s Consent found her path blocked when second at Deauville.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 3.7 Danielle, 9.9 Crepe Suzette, 25 Zilfee (5.3 place)
PRINCIPLE IS AT STAKE..
⭕ 3.35 Doncaster William Haggas has the favourite for the Cambridgeshire in Crown Of Oaks but another stable entry for the big Newmarket handicap, First Principle, can today reveal himself as a horse to follow on the autumn ground.
First Principle, a Kingman colt who made virtually all at Windsor the last day, beat the 100-rated Spectacular View at Kempton on debut and the third horse home has won since.
Though not easy to train, or to ride, since then, the step up in trip will see First Principle much more at home.
He has most to fear from Italian Derby winner Molveno and Devil’s Advocate, who is also down in grade from Group level.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 7.2 First Principle, 22 Devils Advocate, 31 Molveno
