ABCDE Man of Harlech
Now 7lb higher than when second over CD in September. Stepped up in trip since, fourth in middle-distance event at AW Championships recently. Trainers 12 AW winners this year have been costly at a moderate strike rate.
ABCDE Storm Rock
Well behind Mutarakez last Spring and pipped by You’re Fired in small field at Nottingham at the end of the season. Trainer has always had a modest strike rate and 0-11 on AW this year.
ABCE Secret Brief
Charlie Appleby has had just one winner in UK this year, though went close with Tryster at highest level in Dubai, where Secret Brief was third in a big-field mile handicap in February. Placed in Listed races at home last Spring but last success in 2014 at 7f.
ABDE Beach Bar
Reached the frame at Meydan at sixth attempt. Best form at home was class-2 at Leicester over a mile plus in October.
ACDE Express Himself
Good mile form since last April – 33121 – on most types of ground but raised 8lb to new high for last success and stable has scored only once this year.
ACDE Lat Hawill
Trainer has had 10 winners on AW this year. Small-field Gowran winner for Ger Lyons has prepped on AW for Marco Botti, who has had had 10 winners on AW this yerar.
ACDE Mutarakez
Three wins in a row including first time last season and regarded as a Group horse by capable trainer but hanging badly as if something was amiss in bid for high-quality Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot. Broke his maiden at Doncaster on an easy surface.
ACD Brave Zolo
Only gradual improvement – raised a pound from June last year for three races until February – and got the run of a tactical race for first win since last Spring at Wolverhampton. Stable has had two losing favourites from last three runners.
ACD Udododontu
While Udododontu has landed a win and a big-field second in Dubai, Saeed bin Suroor’s UK AW runners have struck at a rate of 31%. Udododontu was second in the Britannia at Royal Ascot, which is just about the best form on show here.
ACE Emell
Hard to win with (2-32 in 6f and 7f races 20 months apart), and last two tries at 1m, he was last and last but one.
ADE Birdman
Won his first three starts last Spring, including at Doncaster, and picked up the winning thread again in midsummer but overall rise of 34lb finally caught up with him, placed twice but struggling after July.
ADE You’re Fired
Third to Birdman at York, and beat Storm Rock a neck at Nottingham on the soft, late season. Same weight differences with both horses today. Stable had eighth winner of the year yesterday.
AD Lord Of The Land
Market order this week but, switched from Andre Fabre to David O’Meara, has no form in British Isles. Has won ordinary races from Polytrack to heavy turf but, as brother to a French Guineas and Derby winner, seemingly has huge potential in handicap company.
AE Heavens Guest
Won the International (7f) at Ascot in July, and not disgraced in Champions Sprint in October. But this will be only second run at 1m in 37 starts.
AE Rene Mathis
7f winner at Goodwood (soft) and Newmarket (firm) and placed in 15 of 31 starts. But seventh in Balmoral Handicap, sole attempt at a mile in October.
AE Sirius Prospect
Best form at 7f but did win at Kempton over a mile, and third of five in Doncaster Mile at this meeting last year.
A Battle Of Marathon
Fit from four runs in Dubai but finished last in Winter Derby. Has won only at 6f but drops down in class here.
BDE Ocean Tempest
Lincoln winner of 2014 on soft ground and followed up with Listed win at Ascot. Found Group racing beyond him since and not won since August of that year. Seven now.
BE Fire Ship
Pattern-race career (not won since Group-3 winner Deauville, August 2013) ground to a halt with last of six in Celebration Mile at Goodwood last August. Has tried hurdles this winter. Seven now.
BE Ingleby Angel
Straight-Mile Championship winner at Redcar 2013 but long losing run until class-3 success at Carlisle in September. Both those wins on firm. Seven now.
CD Stipulate
Group-3 placed in England way back for Sir Henry Cecil until switched to Australia, handicapping. But won only a Listed at Caulfield and a seven-year-old now.
DE Farlow
Third Richard Fahey runner (after Heaven’s Guest and Rene Mathis) and the one best served by a mile. Has won at Doncaster but an eight-year-old now and others should have the legs of him.
SAINT’S ALIVE TO ANOTHER BANGOR CHANCE
3.00 Wolverhampton Sbraase has been coaxed back to form for a repeat in this. Last year’s win was one of three successes for this Sir Percy entire on a course which is a successful stamping ground for Newmarket trainer James Tate.
It’s a step back up in class for Bayan Kasirga, and Brandon castle was a beaten favourite last time he dropped to this level.
3.15 Bangor Venetia Williams (Lower Hope Dandy) in only modest form. Red Devil Lads looking for a restorative after hard races in marathon steeplechases. Weststreet not showing a lot to warrant this handicap mark. Shantou Tiger needing top of the ground.
It all goes to suggest that course-specialist Saint John Henry – back to back wins over CD here at the start of the year – can continue the recent David Pipe resurgence (six winners in the last week).
7.40 Chelmsford Andrew Balding had Classic hopes of Victoria Pollard when she won first time at Newbury last Spring but she was only seventh in the Cheshire Oaks and couldn’t even manage a modest handicap in the summer.
What to do with a ‘tricky’ animal? (‘Tricky’ is the trainer’s own word). Answer: Go for it first time out, when she’s forgotten what it’s all about. Choose a modest class-4 affair.
Hope there’s a modest bridesmaid (Dark Red) in there as favourite and that the more likely danger (Mystical Spirirt) is trying a new trip. BETDAQ layers say Victoria Pollard is 8.0 the win and 3.3 the place. Thanks.
