BLUE MOON SPOILS BROTHER GAMBLE Colins Brother (WON 9-4 from 4.0 BETDAQ) kept up the winner-a-day sequence yesterday covering Daqman’s singles with profit to spare, apart from the supernap, Suhayl Moon at Lingfield. That’s how much Daqman relied upon it, but Moon was eclipsed, when hampered making his challenge.

THREE THURSDAY BETS: DAQMAN has a SUPERNAP at Exeter today and two other bets to win 20 points – both backed up by insurance on the place market to save the win stakes.

WHISPER HAS SHOUT ON SATURDAY

Remember the Lingfield coup that never was? This Saturday back at Lingfield we may learn more of what happened in the Listed Churchill Stakes that Saturday one month ago.

This Saturday’s declared runners suggest that we could be seeing the race run again! Or at least the main contenders in the same Listed level of race.

WHO backed Battalion from 14-1 earlier in the week to 9-2 on the Friday night before the Churchill Stakes, and why did all the bookies join in the swingeing price cut?

WHO then laid Battalion all day on the Saturday from 8.2 early mouse in exchanges to 28.0 (yes, 28.0) in the run up to the race?

The horse they couldn’t get enough of all week they suddenly couldn’t give away! Was it the coup that never was? Was a plunge horse foiled by a problem on the day? Or did layers win twice, the springer sprung?

I only know from my racereader that ‘Battalion, slow away, raced in last place, every chance into the straight and moved up menacingly on the rail, but no further impression, faded.’

Trained Jamie Osborne and ridden Dougie Costello, Battalion, says the Post, is a four-time CD winner but hadn’t been seen since April.

‘Stayed on having raced out the back after a slow start.’

I finally concluded that a telephone tipster got a Chinese whisper. It was not Battalion ‘off for its life’ but Enigmatic, which won the claiming stakes on the same card at 2-1, heavily supported.

Enigmatic is trained Jamie Osborne and was ridden Dougie Costello. Both Battalion and Enigmatic are owned by the Melbourne 10 Racing Club.

There was fair warning after the meeting that the Melbourne 10 have 23 horses with Osborne and intend to land about 30 races to win the AW title this winter.

Spokesman for the ‘10’ was the club’s organiser, Ian Barrett, who also shared in that Saturday’s opening-race success of Rusper. Trained Jamie Osbourne. Ridden Dougie Costello.

This coming Saturday, winner, third, fourth and sixth in that Churchill Stakes are all due to meet again in the Listed Quebec Stakes, also at Lingfield. That’s Master The World, Mia Tesoro, Petite Jack and… BATTALION!

HENDERSON NOT FIRING BLANCS

The dearth of runners in novice chases continues today with a match at Exeter and a four runner event at Towcester. Surely it’s time for a radical re-think for these races which simply are not being supported and generally produce a poor betting product?

1.05 Exeter Nicky Henderson had a good day at the office yesterday with four winners across the country and he should strike in the slightly more competitive five runner novice chase at Exeter with Casablanca Mix.

The ex-French trained runner seems to be improving with each start and was a very easy winner at Huntingdon last time out. The resulting penalty is partly offset by Ned Curtis claiming five. ’Casa’ beat Theatre Territory by 12 lengths at Huntingdon and the runner-up went on to frank the form with a good subsequent run at Cheltenham last week when second to Ms Parfois who recorded a quick follow-up win herself yesterday.

The David Pipe trained Shaama Grise was a 12 length runner-up at Plumpton on her chasing debut – she should appreciate the soft conditions but the selection was rated 10lb better over hurdles.

The Nipper notched up a hat-trick in small fields over hurdles but hasn’t yet shown the same sparkle in two starts over fences and was very disappointing at Bangor last time out.

3.45 Exeter No problem with number of runners here! A 17 runner handicap hurdle to conclude proceedings but even with top weight I am very keen on the chances of Market Road.

He is in great form this season and jockey Isabel Williams will be keen to put the record straight after he was seemingly given far too much to do when third at Ludlow last time out. The handicapper keeps him on the same mark and it could be the case of a moral winner without a penalty.

The grey was a winner on his last trip to Exeter when the going was again soft.

Another recent course winner is Gonnabegood who is up 5lb for a narrow win over today’s trip. He is lightly raced but the penalty might be enough to anchor him.

6.45 Chelmsford A competitive maiden in which several of the top stables are represented. Mark Johnston’s The Jungle Vip was beaten at Southwell on debut, but only three parts of a length and finished six clear of the third. He should handle this trip better and looks a little over-priced.
