Trapped on the rails, hampered all the way. ‘Jockey error,’ admitted champion Oisin Murphy. The winner, Mohaather, was superb in beating the younger generation, led in third by Siskin. Says Daqman: ‘If Mohaather was an aeroplane as trainer Tregoning said, then Kameko didn’t leave the hangar. I hope they meet again later on.’

CLASSIC LEVEL BUT BETDAQ 19.5
⭕ 1.45 Goodwood Mark Johnston 3 John Gosden 2 in the decade but only two winners carried more than 9st which suggests that Gosden’s Magical Morning has a tough task on novice form with 9st 5lb.
Johnston has booked Ryan Moore for Zabeel Champion, who has improved 11lb this summer, making all or most in back-to-back wins at Newmarket, which is what you’d expect of this stable on today’s course.
Like Magical Morning, Magnetised and Al Salt have done well only in novice company, but have been backed for this and ‘could be anything’ as they step into the big arena.
The new Paul and Oliver Cole team is doing well since dad started the year under his own name striking at 43%. Celtic Art’s consistent form includes a win and second at Goodwood.
He’s here because he had to miss the French Derby at the last minute. The very idea that he was thought good enough for that marks him down as bonus value at 19.5 on BETDAQ this morning.
I reckon he’s a 8-1 shot, which would require 6.25 points to win 50. I’ll keep my stake and have 6.25 at the 19.5, which could win me 115 or so.
My man in the long grass at Whatcombe seems keen enough, and he knows that I am about to revise my Christmas card list after yesterday’s nod from my Irish contact for ‘the wrong one’ when Early Doors not Them And Us won the Galway Plate for Joseph O’Brien.

ENGLISH KING THOUGH NOT AASY
⭕ 2.45 Goodwood (Gordon Stakes) We’ve had a Melbourne Cup winner and two placed in the St Leger from recent runnings of this, and last year’s winner, Nayef Road, split Stradivarius and Santiago here on Tuesday.
All bar one runner today has a higher rating coming into the race than did Nayef Road and all three of Khalifa Sat, English King and Mogul have higher marks than the Melbourne winner of this, Cross Counter, had at the time.
But that’s because they finished second, fifth and sixth in last month’s Epsom Derby. So this is a real test of the all-the-way winner, Serpentine.
Khalifa Set (second) stuck with his task of wearing down the runaway but English King wasn’t at his best that day, sweating up before the race, yet was one of the strongest finishers, passing Mogul in the final stages..
English King had won the Lingfield Derby Trial quite convincingly and the second horse home went on to be second at Ascot to the subsequent Irish Derby winner, Santiago.
Al Aasy has won well on both Newmarket courses this summer with give in the ground, and is forecast by connections to improve again on this better surface.

ARAMON IS A HANDICAP STANDOUT
⭕ 6.45 Galway (Galway Hurdle) Eight out of 10 to horses aged six and seven, with Willie Mullins currently two out of four, saddling six runners this evening, from 10st 3lb to top-weight Aramon.
Aramon has 3lb more than Willie’s 2018 winner Sharjah carried, but the same rider, Mr Patrick Mullins, who beat all the professionals that day, including Ruby Walsh and Paul Townend, in a similar six-horse attack by the maestro trainer.
Aramon has come a long way since only fourth to the very same Sharjah and Petit Mouchoir at Leopardstown over Christmas. He was runner-up in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham when conceding 12lb to the winner and having lost his right-fore shoe during the race.
On his return at Tipperary in June, he quickened clear of Petit Mouchoir, giving him 11lb, so – at face value – turning round the form of that Leopardstown race by nearly 40lb.
Even if that is way off the mark, he looks a Graded horse in a handicap here and last week I put him in my Fortune Cookies to prove it.
