FOUR DAQMAN NAP BETS IN A ROW UNBEATEN: Daqman, who landed back-to-back naps on Sunday and Monday, could only break even with a win-and-place bet on Tuesday, but bounced back yesterday to banker stakes. You could have won more than 266 points to 20-unit bets at SP.
WON 12-1 MRS BURBIDGE (Sunday) profit 240.00
WON 2-5 MOKAATIL (Monday) profit 8.00
3RD 11-2 SAVANNAH SLEW (Tuesday win and place) break even
WON 10-11 ORTIZ (Wednesday banker) profit 18.18
‘MAGNIFICENT’ THREE-WAY IRISH CHAMPION: Saturday’s Irish Champion Stakes looks like being one of the treats of the season, a magnificent contest with Churchill and Eminent taken on by Poet’s Word, to name but three as they say.
THE BIG THREE CHAMPION BATTLE
You read it here first. This column warned on Monday that Poets Word put up a ‘scintillating’ gallop on the Trials ground at Newmarket on Saturday morning and was 14-1 from 100-1 in places for the Irish Champion Stakes (6.45 Leopardstown Saturday).
Poets Word’s price has halved since then, after Sir Michael Stoute confirmed that (‘he will be a great horse’) yet another huge improver for him takes on Churchill and Eminent in a magnificent three-way contest
CHURCHILL Knows the sting of a Stoute improver after being beaten fully two lengths by Ulysses in the York International, and also beaten by Barney Roy at Royal Ascot.
The dual Guineas winner at Newmarket and The Curragh needs to bounce back for Aidan O’Brien to restore his rating.
EMINENT The Craven Stakes winner seemed to be a nearly horse after sixth in the Guineas, fourth in the Derby and only fifth behind Ulysses in the Eclipse, but was himself scintillating in a Group 2 at Deauville on the last day and is another out to redeem a tall reputation
POETS WORD The challenger with nothing to lose. Has shot up 26lb, stepping out of handicaps to win the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood in the manner of yet another future champion from Freemason Lodge
EXTRA FURLONG LOOKS DANDY
2.20 Salisbury Richard Hannon just missed out in this last year when his favourite failed by a length to give the winning filly 30lb from stall 3.
This time it’s Hannon with the filly against the colts, Dandieqsue, with Ryan Moore booked, also well drawn in stall 4, and primed for her handicap debut with her obligatory trio of runs so quiet that the last twice she’s been 20-1 and 25-1.
She’s an interesting sort by the speedster Dandy Man out of a half sister to The Great Gatsby, which suggests that today’s 7f will help. Offers of 5.6 taken on BETDAQ.
3.50 Salisbury Won by such useful youngsters that, raised from Listed to Group 3, this class-1 fillies’ test for two-year-olds has attracted a bigger field. That means the draw might be important.
Gate 8 and 11 are not helpful for the William Haggas duo, One Minute (didn’t seem to like it soft on the last day) and Lowther fifth Special Purpose (needs quicker ground). Sotwo reasons to oppose them.
The experienced Izzy Bizu (in the one stall) won a Deauville Listed but the runner-up flopped the afterwards in the Prix Calvados.
Eirene (drawn 4 and 4.8 on BETDAQ) likes it soft. Runner-up at Nottingham to the subsequent Gimcrack winner Sands Of Mali before taking a Listed (Mrs Gallagher third, Mistry Spirit and others behind) at Newbury.
The unexposed Oriental Song (stall 2) also likes today’s surface and Owen Burrows is bullish. If we want to win this race, we have to back him, too (6.2 as I write), with Jim Crowley booked.
4.00 Haydock Haydock is So Beloved of the favourite, but a Listed here last May when others were still starting out for the season, is his only success in two years (bridesmaid form includes 25435334255). So hard to win with.
Donjuan Triumphant beat him at Leicester last time but he also hasn’t earned a bouquet in two seasons (‘nearly horse’ form includes 22323).
Yuften has been badly out of form and Accesssion has drifted like a lonely dog on a raft this morning, well over my betting weir for the race to 33.0.
So, even without the new headgear, I think circumstances present a fine opportunity for Solomon’s Bay and his faithful rider Silvestre De Sousa, who won on him at Epsom. Now plummets down the garades from two outings in Group 3 yet is 5.8 on BETDAQ this morning.
4.20 Salisbury Under The Covers made all at Newbury and Ffos Las on soft ground but is up a total of 13lb, and I prefer Thafeera (4.0 on BETDAQ) and Kassia (6.4 offers).
Thafeerawill actually carry 9lb less than when scoring with a strong run at Nottingham, though the handicapper has put him up 8lb.
Kassia has kept much better company and, othough she gives weight away all round, this is her time of year. She has won in September and October three times, and her last six runs at handicap and Listed level have produced these form figures: 112110.
5.20 Salisbury My response to this apprentice race (‘whips shall be carried but not used’) is ‘have money in betting wallet, will not use.’ One day, one of the apprentices will need that stick when he can’t keep his horse straight. What happens then?
