THE BIG FREEZE: Goes on and on. Saturday’s racing looks like being decimated for the second week running. Warwick and Wetherby have already been called off. The big race card at Kempton featuring the Silviniaco Conti Chase and Lanzarote Hurdle is now also under threat with the course set to announce inspection plans at 1pm this afternoon.

ALL-WEATHER: Racing on the all-weather survives (for now). Daqman has Thursday bets from both Lingfield and Chelmsford which are keeping the show on the road.

LINGERING DOUBTS

⭕ 12.58 Lingfield Are we running out of horses? Ensuring racing remains on during the cold spell is obviously important but are there enough horses to sustain any increase in all-weather racing over this period?

The evidence today suggests not as the eight race card at Lingfield has failed to attract any double digit sized fields.

Just the four runners go to post for this seven furlong handicap which presents an opportunity for last week’s course and distance winner Tadreeb to follow up under his 4lb penalty.

That was his first start for Rod Millman and despite the three quarters of a length official winning margin, he may have kept something up his sleeve.

He can see off main Betdaq Betting Exchange market danger Fools Rush In who is having his first start at Lingfield on his 62nd outing! His form is solid enough at this level but Tadreeb looks the more progressive.

PROUD TO LAND HAT-TRICK

⭕ 3.39 Lingfield Forever Proud is sure to make a bold bid to try and land her hat-trick for trainer James Owen and looked in great shape when winning at Wolverhampton on Tuesday. So much so that the resulting 5lb penalty might not halt her progress.

I’ll take her against Royal Observatory who looks too short in the betting for my liking. This one has been a beaten favourite in two of his last three starts and popped up when the money wasn’t down at Chelmsford when scoring in an amateur riders event at 14/1.

Richard Hannon’s Major Major hasn’t won since 2023 but there have been signs recently of a return to form and he definitely has place prospects in this company.

WORTH THE WAIT

⭕ 8.30 Chelmsford It’s class 6 action throughout Chelmsford’s card tonight with the exception of this 10 furlong handicap which rises (unlike the temperatures) to a lofty class 5.

Auguste Lumiere might be worth our wait. He came so close to springing a 33/1 shock over course and distance last month when just beaten a neck on stable debut in what was a better class 4 event. He’s been put up 2lb, which isn’t ideal but I see no reason why he can’t go one better if building on that effort.

Solanna, in contrast, might now struggle having gone up 5lb for his Kempton win in December and his trainer John Butler has been on the cold list since.
