RACING NEEDS TO BE FOOTBALL CRAZY
A whole host of World Cup Qualifiers for football fans to get stuck into tonight got me thinking how much easier football is (on paper anyway) than racing.
Most football punters still stick with one of three options HOME, AWAY or DRAW – so just the three runners to consider, rather than the average of, say 10, in a horse race.
We’re often told that football attracts the younger generation of punters as the choices are that simple at the basic level. Obviously there are a plethora of other markets on BETDAQ for football punters to get stuck into on every match from first goalscorer to the half-time score and plenty in-between but it’s mostly looked upon as HOME, AWAY or DRAW.
It’s the perception that’s interesting. Despite being perceived as easier, I find football betting harder as the pre-match odds tend to be right and, as regular readers know, I like to find an edge on the market.
There’s much more chance of that with horse racing as there are so many more runners to be priced and so many ever changing variables – not least of which the weather.
We known with a coin flip the true odds are 50/50 – but throw in any edge for the house and you will lose long term – but still enjoy peaks of wins along the way.
With horse racing it’s different. The odds aren’t fixed, they change along with interpretation of parameters. Whose to say your interpretation isn’t better than the next man?
Just imagine if racing had something as simple as three options HOME, AWAY or DRAW. It doesn’t. It has less.
Every race, every day you have a binary option on BETDAQ of backing or laying any horse in any race. Think of it as 10 football matches in one event. The only difference being the opposition is the rest of the field not the other team.
Racing can and must do better to position betting as easy as football does. Racing can be as complex or as simple as you want to make it. As we are fed an increasing amount of data about the sport we can’t risk alienating or ignoring the first time younger punter who wants the tools to make a decision as quickly as Man City beating Brighton.
I don’t have the magic answer, but like a lot of things in life now, 140 characters for tweets and fast food served in seconds, speed, convenience and simplicity seem here to stay.
BOOSTING THE PURSE AT LINGFIELD
2.25 Lingfield Keeping the football analogy going Purser is a bigger price to win this race than England are to beat Slovenia tonight but I think they have equal chances!
We’re not going to get rich at around 1.52 on BETDAQ but the John Gosden trained runner really does look a shoe-in. He made a winning debut at Newbury in August and then didn’t run a bad race at all when fourth in the Group 3 Solario Stakes at Sandown. He should find things much easier at this level and should be able to shrug off the penalty.
There’s not much form about from those that have run and the main danger could come from the Godolphin debutant Wajaaha, a son of New Approach.
4.00 Lingfield There’s a few here that are struggling to gain a first win and it’s likely to go to one of the runners with the most experience.
I like the look of the Charles Hills trained Dawaaleeb who is fitted with blinkers for the first time.
He tackles the all-weather for the first time too but his turf form looks superior and he should only have to reproduce his Newmarket effort from August to win this. He was second to Mountain Hunter at HQ and has since finished third to the odds-on Sharja Bridge at Nottingham.
Mr Tyrrell is looking to make it 13th time lucky and has some good placed efforts to his name including here at Lingfield and might be the one to chase the selection home again but is almost certain to find one (or more) too good again.
6.45 Chelmsford A final John Gosden trained runner to complete a day of all-weather bets.
Heather Lark shaped well on debut when third to runaway winner Magic Lily. She will improve for both the experience and the step-up in trip.
She is preferred to forecast favourite Deyaarna who was a beaten favourite at Salisbury last time out when a six length second to Alternative Fact.
