SATURDAY’S TRIAL RACES: After his preview of Saturday’s big chase at Cheltenham over the weekend, Daqman today tests the water in the two Trial races.

WE COULD SEE SAM SWAGGER

⭕ 12.35 Cheltenham, Saturday (Triumph Trial) Defi Du Seuil (2016) is the big-name trial winner who went on to Triumph at Cheltenham.

My double near-miss was when another Trial winner, Allmankind (2019), and my reserve on the day, Goshen, looked like finishing first and second in March, with Goshen 10 lengths clear when coming down at the last.

James Owen, who won this last year with Burdett Road, has booked Sam Twiston-Davies for Liam Swagger, after they landed a double together at Market Rasen and Wetherby (Listed).

Burdett Road is one of the favourites for the Greatwood Hurdle (3.30) on the third day at Cheltenham on Sunday.

⭕ 1.45 Cheltenham, Saturday (Arkle Trial) Henry De Bromhead’s Put The Kettle On (2019) beat Al Dancer in this before taking the Arkle proper in March and the Champion Chase the following year.

The most likely yard for further Irish success on Saturday is Joseph O’Brien’s: he chooses from the ex-French five-year-old Jordans, a recent winner at Punchestown, and San Salvador who was Jordans conqueror at Listowel in September.

But Gordon Elliott seems shy of the race because of what Fascile Mode (better backed and with a better finish for trainer Thomas Mullins) did to his Touch Me Not at Punchestown recently. Touch Me Not is likely to go to Navan on Saturday instead.

Keeping your powder dry? If you don’t fancy the results of these autumn tests, the Triumph Trial for the March festival 2025 here in January was won last year by Sir Gino, who beat this Saturday’s Trial winner, Burdett Road.

Where did the subsequent 2024 Arkle winner, Gaelic Warrior, come from? He had beaten Il Etait Temps in the Faugheen Chase at Limerick over Christmas. Trainer of both: Willie Mullins.

BREAD, BUTTER AND JAM

⭕ 2.40 Market Rasen I much prefer the experience (and form) of Bread And Butter here over the handicap debutant Tribal Glory whose starting handicap mark of 112 looks plenty high enough and a full 10lb higher than Bread And Butter.

Bread And Butter’s trainer Olly Murphy is operating at a 1 in 4 strike-rate (10 from 40) over the last fortnight and that sequence includes the selection’s win at Hereford last Monday where he defied his 16/1 price in some style to win a conditional riders handicap and therefore escaping a penalty here.

Tribal Glory has been a beaten favourite in three of his four starts under rules and the form of his Newton Abbot placed efforts – whilst consistent – also look quite modest in pure form terms.

I think the pair will dominate with the dual course and distance winning mare Kosasiempre possibly a little high in the weights now.

I’VE GOT THE NEEDLE

⭕ 5.30 Chelmsford Needlepoint is hard to assess but surely not hard to dismiss either on price grounds?

The Amy Murphy trained runner has been off the course for a considerable 515 days since making a winning debut at Chantilly. It was a promising debut from the filly but it’s a leap of faith to expect her to do it again after such an absence and also on her all-weather debut.

Space Trooper’s form isn’t as exciting on paper, but solid enough and I think he can see off the likely Betdaq Betting Exchange market leader.

He is race fit, has performed well on both turf and the all-weather and comes into this on the back of chasing home the long odds-on Kisdon Force at Newcastle with the pair pulling nine and a half lengths clear.

Anamika is also worthy of a mention. The Marco Botti trained filly improved on her Wolverhampton debut to take second here last time out over the mile trip.

She likes to race up with the pace and will hopefully set up the race for Space Trooper to turn on the afterburners.

THE POWER OF GOOD

⭕ 7.00 Chelmsford I’m not quite sure what the handicapper is doing here by dropping Kessaar Power 2lb for his course second over the shorter seven furlong trip?

He only failed by a short head and surely if the verdict had gone the other way he would have been lucky to have got into this on the same mark let alone less and we are only talking inches worth of fine margins after all.

Whatever the thinking by the weights and measures department it’s hard not to get enthusiastic about the chances of Kessaar Power who was also a course and distance winner last month.

Dashing Donkey is in good form but the step up to a mile doesn’t fill me with much hope given he was weakening inside the final furlong when last seen here over seven furlongs.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
