ABC GUIDE TO CHELTENHAM GOLD: Daqman starts his day with an ABC preview of Saturday’s gold-cup race at Cheltenham: does X mark the winner?
TOP 10 IN SATURDAY’S CUP CONTEST
⚠️ HEADS UP ⚠️ Paul Nicholls warned last night that their Friday morning work will decide whether Il Ridoto runs in the Autumn Gold Cup on Saturday and whether Sonigino lines up for the Greatwood Hurdle on Sunday.
⭕ 2.20 Cheltenham, Saturday (Autumn Gold Cup)
STATS: LAYS LOGIC: No favourite has won since Edward O’Grady’s Tranquil Sea (11-2 fav) in 2009.
A AGE: No horse of double-figure age has won since Clear Cut in 1975. This century: 7yo 9, 6yo 4, 8yo 4, 9yo 4.
B WEIGHT: Only 7-22 have won this century with more than 11st; only three have carried less than 10st 5lb.
B RATINGS (10 years) 159, 139, 143, 147, 156, 134, 146, 143, 137, 147.
C TRAINERS: Nigel Twiston-Davies 4, Jonjo O’Neill 3, Paul Nicholls 2; one each Philip Hobbs, Kerry Lee, Alan King, Gary Moore, David Pipe, Sue Smith, Evan Williams, Venetia Williams.
JOCKEYS: Sam Twiston-Davies 2; one each Tom Bellamy, Aidan Coleman, Ryan Mania, Richie McLernon, Jamie Moore, Tom O’Brien, Richard Patrick.
X FORM: This century 10 winners had been placed in a Grade 1.
XABC GA LAW
Grade-2 winner, placed in a Grade-1 novice chase, pays his first visit to Cheltenham with form of 111323 over fences. After a long absence, still has time on his side and was promising on his return in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree.
ABC DEMACHINE
Another decent novice returned with a win after absence since flopping favourite twice at the start of the year. Wind ops seemed to do the trick and he won a Class A chase at Uttoxeter with some ease.
ABC UMBRIGADO
Landed a hat-trick when winning the Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury in March. Back in winning mode last month and trainer David Pipe’s form in the week up to Tuesday was: 100100110002321.
XAB SHAKEM UP’ARRY
Stayed on well, third in the Red Rum Chase over the Mildmay Course at Aintree in April but that was 2m, as was his best form previously.
AB MIDNIGHT RIVER
Wetherby winner last year and immediately added to his chasing CV with 25-lengths romp at Stratford late last month.
AC FONTAINE COLLONGES
Venetia Williams has yet to strike form and this mare has won only at novice level, both hurdles and chasing.
A FRENCH DYNAMITE
Mouse Morris admits this one is just short of Graded level and this handicap might suit. Though he had won only novice-level chases, his Thurles win in March was a Grade 3..
A HAPPYGOLUCKY
Building a solid profile; fourth in the Martin Pipe over hurdles; runner-up in the Ultima Chase at the Cheltenham festival and Grade-3 winner three weeks later at Aintree. But that was all back in the 2020-21 season and this is a tall order to strike first time after 581 days off.
A STOLEN SILVER
Sam Thomas has been in fine form and Sam Twiston-Davies did the steering when Stolen Silver won the Silver Trophy at Cheltenham in April, after running fourth in the Plate at the festival.
BC IL RIDOTO
Paul Nicholls is on an incredible run of 20 winners (47% strike rate), his current form 1110111, still standing. Il Ridoto won the Jim Joel Memorial at Newbury (2m handicap) when only four but struggled in Graded company after that.
JOCKEYS KEY TO BETDAQ VALUE BETS
⭕ 2.05 Market Rasen Some trainers secure certain jockeys almost exclusively, and Sam Twiston-Davies has scored 202 times for Dr Richard Newland in the last five seasons.
Sam has been beaten four times into second on the quirky Seinesational, with their best run from the front, dropped back to today’s distance.
What better course to try to make all than Market Rasen, particularly with an animal that stays further and can save enough to try to slip the field from the final bend.
Betty Baloo won her novice at Catterick in the Spring in very slow time and Neil Mulholland’s Hidden Depths has been on the drift this morning without his winning riders, Tom Scudamore and, yes, Sam Twiston-Davies.
That can be taken as a strong hint for Seinesational in this one and for a Mulholland bet at Taunton.
⭕ 4.10 Taunton This is where Mulholland gets Tom Scudamore’s services for Molliana; she took this mares’ hurdle last year on firm ground and will be wanting this before the weather changes again.
BETDAQ value 7.8 Seinesational at Market Rasen, 4.6 Molliana at Taunton.
FIND THE LADY TO GET FANTASTIC 3.9
⭕ 3.15 Market Rasen After 216 days off since she unseated in the Topham Trophy, Fantastic Lady returns with a step up in trip for this 3m mares’ Listed chase.
The slower race is either to help her with her jumping or open new avenues for her; or both.
When Aidan Coleman won on her, he insisted she’s a straightforward ride, and trainer Nicky Henderson is on 50% since the end of October: 7-14, still standing.
Front-runner Zambella is another 20-furlong chaser but she has attempted 3m before, blundering at the last at Perth and finishing a long third at odds on.
She’ll probably be held up this time but all her success has come on much softer ground.
With a 67% strike-rate at Rasen, Henry Daly and Richard Patrick are going for a hat-trick in this race.
Their contender is Precious Eleanor, five times second until she won back to back by big margins in the Spring; she should again reach the first two, as the one whose pedigree is most convincing for this trip.
But she has never won first run back and she faces an interesting rematch here with Little River Bay, who – in first-time blinkers – struggled behind Precious Eleanor at Cheltenham but was giving the winner 11lb and lost a shoe during the race.
Legends Ryde won two handicaps in novice company at Fontwell in the Spring at 2m 5f and 3m 2f.
