ARC OPEN TO PUNTING AGAIN: The Arc de Triomphe looked like a clash of the super-filly favourite against the top French colts. After their flops at Deauville this week, Enable is left out on her own. But that opens the door to have-a-go trainers and the possibility of a big field after all. Have a punt on BETDAQ! You might find the long-shot that suddenly has hope.
BOB A JOB AT 5-2 FOR DAQMAN: Winner-a-day Daqman scored with Maori Bob (WON 5-2) yesterday, following Mustashry (WON 5-1) on Tuesday. Today he finds a filly in Ireland whose last race was behind Enable. Now has it much easier, yet was offered at 9.8 on BETDAQ this morning.
33 POINTS OF ‘ARC’ OVERS ANTE-POST
Can anything reel in Enable? With the apparent demise of the French colts Almanzor and Brametot this week, John Gosden’s filly is left isolated at the head of the Arc market.
But it’s a long way to the big one at Chantilly on October 1 and already such as Richard Hannon has posted the possibility of a crack at her. Barney Roy, 18.0 in the BETDAQ ante-post orange, is as low as 12-1 with layers.
One huge gap is between Ladbrokes’ 8-1 Highland Reel as a now-genuine contender but 18.0 on BETDAQ. Ulysses is 12-1 in a place but 22.0 with your favourite exchange.
Perhaps the biggest anomaly of all is the layers’ 14-1 (12-1 in a place) Waldgeist, which was 45.0 in the BETDAQ ante-post orange this morning. A pound on that and, if he runs, you could have 33 points of overs to spend.
It’s all to play for in the European championship and horses once ruled out are now back on the oche, at least in the minds of bookmakers trying to make a fast buck. On BETDAQ, it’s you who make the buck.
TALKING HORSE AT 6.2 ON BETDAQ
3.50 Salisbury Nine winners in the decade have been three-year-olds but not until last year did a favourite score. That’s what I like to see: very stout stats being ignored by the betting public! Gives me a price..
Cribbs Causeway (Roger Charlton) and Jive Talking (Michael Bell) get up to 27lb from the older horses and are so being ignored that they were 4.7 and 6.2 on BETDAQ this morning, with the 9-4 forecast favourite under pressure at 4.4, giving away 21lb and 23lb respectively.
4.20 Salisbury (Sovereign Stakes) Master The World would be a winner back on the old stamping ground for renaissance trainer David Elsworth but the six-year-old has never mastered the art of putting two wins together in 40 starts (moderate 10% strike rate).
Carry On Deryck didn’t fail by far to step out of handicap company but that was 313 days ago, and more likely to achieve that today is Ballet Concerto, though Tabarrak is breathing down his neck at levels.
Just in front of him at the top of the ratings is Hathal, equipped with cheekpieces and Frankie Dettori, who takes over after two good efforts by Hathal in Group-2 company this season.
Andrew Balding has won this race twice recently but the three-year-old Isomer needs to bounce back to the days when he could run Churchill second in the Chesham Stakes. Has won only his maiden since.
6.00 Yarmouth The last time Hajaj ran in such lowly company, he beat 15 others at Ascot in the Spring. Cracking 4.3 on BETDAQ early mouse.
6.35 Leopardstown This two-year-old test, won by Order Of St George (2014), has his stablemate Nelson odds-on forecast favourite but the third horse when he ran second in his maiden remained a long-standing maiden hiumself (form 2223) but only ahalf a length behind Nelson.
And Seamie Heffernan seems to prefer nezwcomer Christopher Robin whose dam is half-sister to a French Derby winner.
I fancy a pound or a euro (not much in it these days) on another debutant, Tashman (5.7 offers), for Dermot Weld, whose Free Eagle won this first time out.
IT UNRAVELS TO INTRICATELY
7.10 Leopardstown (Desmond Stakes) Some decent winners of this, among them Gordon Lord Byron (2013).
Three-year-olds are six out of 10 but up against strong opposition here, notably Morando, raiding for Roger Varian.
Morando has stepped up 27lb in four starts, rising through class 3 to Class 2 handicaps to a Listed win on the last day (after being gelded).
Second-season animals, True Valour and Alexios Komnenos, have already taken on older horses, split by Sea Wolf in a Listed at The Curragh on the first day of July.
Sea Wolf is better off with both but, before you jump in, remember that either one or both of the unexposed three-year-olds are entitled to have come on any amount since that race, and that Sea Wolf, though five, hasn’t even tried his hand at Group company until now.
But these young handicappers have a ‘hidden horse’ to beat. Intricately drops dramatically in class (and trip) from Irish Guineas and Oaks attempts against the champion three-year-olds of the season so far, Enable and Winter, and offers of 9.8 on BETDAQ are begging to be backed.
