THUNDEROUS IS THE BIG NOISE
⭕ 6.50 Sandown (Henry 11 Stakes) The question-mark in this race is whether Thunderous is a true Cup horse. Last year’s Dante winner on good to soft steps up to 2m for the first time.
He has usually led in his races so far but connections hope that first-time visor will enable Franny Norton to make choices.
When upped to 1m 5f+ he was threeparts of a length off winning the Ormonde at Chester, then (over a bit further still) he ran Stradivarius to a length in the Yorkshire Cup; though beaten comfortably, he kept on and trainer Mark Johnston described it as ‘a terrific battle.’
Thunderous is a horse who doesn’t accumulate a fan club; he’s always a price though he almost always runs well and, despite very little attention to his rating by the handicapper, he is improving at age five, as those results suggest.
He was well behind Max Vega in the John Porter but that one trailed in last behind him in the Yorkshire Cup.
Enemy has run in three Group races – including third in the Sagaro – but has won only at handicap level.
Half a length in front of him, just failing to win, was Quickthorn, runner-up to a prepping Trueshan at Nottingham, but another who has done best at handicap level (second in the Ebor with Alounak third).
John Leeper, three lengths off Thunderous in the Ormonde, wearing a first-time hood, might also improve for the trip but he’s generally disappointing, and I’m hoping his selection by Pricewise helps create a price for Thunderous!
GOSDEN HAS THE MOST TO LOSE
⭕ 7.25 Sandown (Brigadier Gerard Stakes) A cracking contest with six-out-of-seven Mostahdaf trying to claw back for John Gosden a big lead by the current trainers in form, William Haggas (Addeybb) and Sir Michael ‘Desert Crown’ Stoute (Bay Bridge,) unbeaten in four starts since a juvenile.
Addeybb ran second in the 2021 Eclipse to St Mark’s Basilica, who would go on to win the Irish Champion Stakes and complete a five-timer.
His form is 1412 after each seasonal break; he likes cut in the ground and his stable is striking at an incredible 41%.
Both he and Lord Glitters have Group form in Bahrain, Dubai or Australia and age is less serious in the pattern of 10-furlong races because so few horses are capable at this in-between trip.
You can argue that an eight-year-old won a depleted field for this race last year but four-year-olds were seven out of nine before that, and Addeybb has been held up in his work.
Sir Michael Stoute has won this race 11 times, and he matured Bay Bridge from a class-4 novice to a Listed winner in six months of last season, but he’s been off a long while before this final step into Group company.
Mostahdaf is penalised for a this-year’s Group win, the Gordon Richards over today;’s course and distance in April but this is the race in which he could set down future Group-1 credentials.
INIGO JONES TO LAND THE CUP
⭕ 8.00 Sandown (Whitsun Cup) Again, I can’t spend money on ‘aged’ horses (Ouzo, Lyndon B and Raising Sand). There’s been some support overnight for Lyndon B as a CD winner but his Sandown strikes have always come after plenty of warm–up races.
Inigo Jones (BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE 3.2) is interesting for Sir Michael Stoute, dropped back in trip for a forceful ride from Ryan Moore.
Farasi Lane (first-time visor) is a CD winner a grade lower on soft ground, and should follow the selection home.
Rebel Territory needed the run after the break last year and his stable has failed to strike form. Fantasy Believer and Wonder Elmossman have yet to score on turf.
