2.35 Goodwood Love Dreams quickly asserted from the 7 stall and made all in this race last year. Back in form, 5lb lower and now with the 3 draw, he’s sure to make a bold bid this afternoon.
But Roger Varian’s grey Game Player needed only hands-and-heels riding to score at Lingfield (turf) on the last day, and the second horse home has boosted the form since.
Though he’s won the Royal Hunt Cup and was runner-up in the Victoria Cup, Zhui Feng has been gelded and had a wind op. He certainly won’t be hanging around.
Could be he’ll make his 105 rating look low but probably in a Royal Ascot handicap, though taking a bit of 15.5 on BETDAQ today won’t hurt.
HULCOTE RECKONED BETTER CLASS
3.10 Goodwood Hyanna has to raise her game, up in class and weight. It was hard work for her at Salisbury to beat Dono Di Dio, giving a stone, but she’s better off today.
One of the 200 experts on the Racing Post is saying that she won an open race and is back with fillies and mares now. You could say that but it’s pretty meaningless since Dono Di Dio is a filly and the third home was a gelding who came into the race on a losing run of eight.
Hulcote strikes me as better class. She has not until today been asked to use the stamina in her blood from the dam’s side but has been raced up to 1m 2f, as was her sire, Frankel.
She quickened well up the hill at Sandown and today’s step up in trip and final climb at Goodwood seem made for her. Frankel’s best son, Cracksman, won over 1m 4f.
FULL AUTHORITY FOR A SUPERNAP
6.35 Sandown (National Stakes) Despite small fields, a low draw is essential. The last seven winners ALL came out of stalls 1, 2, 3.
Yorkshire yards are going for a hat-trick, with Full Authority (from the one stall) the one most likely to. In fact, very likely to after an all-the-way win at Chester, where he was also blessed with a low draw (came out of 3).
He’s not just a do-or-die round-the-bend type. He’s a Kingman, expected to make this his stepping-stone to Royal Ascot, if all goes well again today.
But this is a race of five previous winners, with Proper Beau (stall 2) another openly declared an Ascot hopeful, depending on the outcome here.
Ryan Moore has been booked for the filly, Jm Jackson (stall 7 but getting 5lb from the colts). Beaten favourite at Thirsk but the winner then stepped up two grades and won at Ascot.
BE A PLAYER ON THE VARIAN GREY
7.05 Sandown (Henry 11 Stakes) I was talking about a Frankel getting 1m 4f at Goodwood (3.00 race). Now here’s one, Mekong, stepping up to 2m, with pretensions of a place in the Ascot Gold Cup.
Mekong is trained by man of the moment Sir Michael Stoute, who has just landed Mustashry winner of the Lockinge among six successes from seven races.
Mekong, a 4.8 offer on BETDAQ, is the first of some big players for Team Stoute tonight, as he attempts a pattern-race hat-trick. Ran away with a Haydock handicap but that was on heavy ground.
Dee Ex Bee, last year’s Derby runner-up, staked his claim for the Cup races this year by taking the Sagaro Stakes on his reappearance. Never had the gears to cope over shorter with the likes of Kew Gardens and Cross Counter last season. This could be his forte.
His trainer, Mark Johnston, makes it difficult to go nap, as he is responsible for three of the five starters, his two others more or less on a ratings par with Dee Ex Bee because of his penalty, though bearing in mind – as for everything else running in quality races right now – this is an ideal prep time for Royal Ascot.
MATTERHORN IS A HIGH CLIMBER
7.35 Sandown (Brigadier Gerard Stakes) Sir Michael Stoute is going for a hat-trick and a tenth win in this race since 1991.
Again he’s trying to open new doors for his contender, Regal Reality, stepping him up from the Group-2 mile here in which he was involved in the finish despite a slow start.
His problem is Matterhorn, who has climbed the ratings 22lb this year, and was AW middle-distance champion at Lingfield with a scintillating seven-lengths dismissal of Cambridgeshire winner, Wissahickon.
Matterhorn was put into my Fortune Cookies as an improver going places but you can say that about most Stoute contenders. At the offers and the prices, I can only close my eyes and hope I’m on the right one. Stoute’s Mustashry has put Fortune Cookies well into profit.
COMEDY STAR OF KINGMAN DRAMA
8.10 Sandown (Heron Stakes) Sangarius (Stoute again) came into the early Fortune Cookies as a Classic outsider; so did Bell Rock at one stage. Neither has made it to the track until now, after a long break since the autumn.
Both are Kingmans taking on John Gosden’s attempt to win this back to back through King Of Comedy and Lord North. The plan is that King Of Comedy, another Kingman (there are five in the race altogether) can follow in the hoofprints of last year’s winner, stablemate Without Parole, and win the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Aacot.
It’s hard to resist him, since these races are Plan B for Sangarius and Bell Rock, while Dark Vision flopped in the Guineas and Walkinthesand is an edgy sort, typical bridesmaid (three seconds in four starts).
I have 20 going on Sangarius in Fortune Cookies, and I have the opportunity of saving that stake through King Of Comedy, and I’ll do a similar thing with Regal Reality to save on Matterhorn earlier. I want the daily profit.
