DAQMAN BIG-RACE DOUBLE OF NAP AND LAY: Give Daqman the big meetings and he’s dynamite! On New Year’s Day he put the old year to rest with a place lay on New Year’s Eve (unplaced 7-2 favourite) and his first nap of 2014 was Double Ross (WON 11-8).
HE GOES 13-4 UP ON PRICEWISE: I can’t wait for more big meetings on Saturday, says Daqman, who beat Pricewise 2-0 with the nap and lay, so going 13-4 up since he challenged the Racing Post value man near the end of November.
ANOTHER RETURN AT 7-2: Daqman, who also tipped Return Spring (WON 7-2) and Annie Power (WON 2-5) yesterday for four winners on the day, is scheduled to launch his 2014 bankers on Saturday after 23 from 28 last year.
My 2014 bankers are set to start on Saturday… so watch this space !!
That’s weather permitting of course and thankfully all racing goes ahead today after Huntingdon and Ayr both passed their morning inspections.
Hardly surprising that the going is heavy at both venues – there are also all-weather cards at Southwell and Wolverhampton to look forward to.
There’s been plenty of speculation about additional all-weather tracks coming soon. Newcastle and Catterick are both at the planning stage and one of the main reasons cited are high transport costs.
Regional National Trainers Federation chairman Tom Tate said: “High transport costs and poor prize-money make it uneconomic for us to run horses on the more southerly tracks and there’s no doubt we are suffering financially due to the lack of opportunities in the north. We therefore would very much welcome a northern all-weather track.”
Punters will care more for the surface. Polytrack is of course predominant with it being installed at Lingfield, Kempton, Wolverhampton and Dundalk – but many experienced punters like the Fibresand at Southwell because they feel it gives them an edge favouring horses who go on the surface. Other surfaces that may be considered by course executives include Tapeta, designed by former National Hunt training legend Michael Dickinson which has proved a success in the States and claims to be a safer racing surface for both horse and jockey with minimal kickback.
In the 1.30 at Southwell today we have a good example of a course specialist in the Download The Ladbrokes App Claiming Stakes.
Sofias Number One has recent form figures of 181074 – but if you just filter that down to Southwell runs his figures are 511114.
He is already well in at the weights, based on official ratings, and safe in the knowledge that he is a track specialist he looks a solid bet at around 2.18 on BETDAQ at the time of writing.
Just as we look for course experts at Southwell – we also need to consider heavy ground experts over the jumps today.
For that reason I have to go against top weight Just Benny in the 1.10 at Huntingdon. It’s a moderate race but he has zero experience on ground as testing as this and was left a remote second at Uttoxeter last time out, a full 243 days ago.
Boomtown’s recent third at Uttoxeter last time out came on heavy ground and he is much preferred.
For my outsider of the day I’m keen on Boris The Blade in the 1.50 at Ayr – despite him being out of form so far this season.
He will relish this trip and the mud and can get into the places. He has slipped to a rating of 91 which catches the eye under these conditions.
DAQMAN’S BETS:
BET 5pts win BOOMTOWN (1.10 Huntingdon)
BET 2pts win and place (Outsider Of The Day) BORIS THE BLADE (1.50 Ayr)
BET 5pts win (nap) SOFIAS NUMBER ONE (1.30 Southwell)
