LAY-DAY TWO OUT OF THREE: After tipping three winning favourites in a row on Sunday, Daqman yesterday opposed three morning favourites for what he called Mug A Favourite Time. It was a lay-day pay-day from The Good Doctor (pulled up 13-8 fav) and Noon Iron (2nd 7-2 jt fav) but Jasmin De Grugy (won 7-4 fav) spoiled the threesome.

SOMERSET NATIONAL: Daqman has two strong tips from his contacts today and reckons the Somerset National rates some bull’s-eye bets.

TURGEON ON AINTREE TRAIL

⭕ 3.45 Wincanton (Somerset National) I can’t recall a country National answering the question: Is this a Grand National horse for Aintree?

I think punters and Press will see this race that way. As for me, I reckon there is enough information already to say ‘yes’ about King Turgeon’s future but it’s a fast track today.

So he and Katate Dori may be making the good offers for some solid Wincanton performers, My Silver Lining and Credo.

The real Aintree question about King Turgeon is whether he is ready at aged seven, with the only winner of that age in the last 75 years Noble Yeats (2022).

King Turgeon Has already won at the top National tracks (Aintree and Chepstow) and on the Gold Cup course at Cheltenham.

Chepstow in October prepped him for success over the National fences in the Grand Sefton at Aintree and a Graded chase (3m 2f) at Chepstow.

That took his mark from 118 to 139, so there’s room for several more strikes to add to his hat-trick!

King Turgeon is a really good jumper, in contrast to I Am Maximus, who proved last year that you don’t need to be to win a Grand National.

Katate Dori is another seven-year-old and another one jumping well: up 17lb for back-to-back class-4 success on soft-heavy and may find the fast track and faster ground a tricky combination today.

Collectors Item was runner-up in the London National at Sandown last month, a quarter of a mile further than today.

Credo won the Desert Orchid Silver Cup over today’s course and distance 14 months ago and was fourth in the Warwick Classic (3m 5f) and fifth in the BMW Chase at Punchestown (3m 7.5f). Blinkered now.

My Silver Lining Wincanton winner twice on good ground. Took the last Warwick Classic, second in the Haydock Grand National trial and third in the Midlands Grand National. Cheekpieces first time and trainer in form (4-9).

Take Your Time Class-4 winner here on heavy. Placed in higher grades since.

GUSTOSO MAY BE THROWN IN

⭕ 3.10 Wincanton King Turgeon’s trainer, David Pipe, may already have landed the first leg of a double with Phantomofthepoints who stepped up on a single novice-hurdle win in April by returning in November with a staying-on third in a premier stayers’ handicap at Haydock.

‘The Phantom’ beat recent Doncaster winner Cloud Dancer very easily at Chepstow last Spring.

Off The Jury is living off his good effort behind The New Lion last Spring but his form of 24322 confirms yet again that owner-jockey David Maxwell’s refusal to use the whip is very costly.

Gustoso scored on his first attempt at 3m and could be thrown in with 10st 6lb. Billy Boi Blue won at Wetherby first time at 3m. Rivers Corner has scored here at the trip but on heavy ground.

The Charles Byrnes winner at the eighth attempt in 2023, Grozni needed first-time visor to score after six attempts for James Owen.

NIGHT JET CHASING A FUTURE

⭕ 1.50 Ludlow Tom Symonds leaves behind the hills of Hentland and the fabulous Wye Valley for just an hour to reach Ludlow with ‘a snip at the weights’, says my man.

Symonds’ current form of 2221 should be enhanced by Night Jet, who makes his chasing debut with nearly two stone in hand of the top-weights Heva Rose and Lucky Lugger.

Night Jet, from the family of an Irish National winner, has been placed twice over hurdles and is now ready to show his true colours over fences.

⭕ 5.00 Chelmsford He’s another super hit for Marco Botti, says a Newmarket contact, who likes to talk in riddles, which work wat chers do when they think they have something up their sleeve.

It transpires that Super Hit landed a gamble for Botti in this race last year and Easily Convinced has been taking good money to repeat the trick this time around.
