JAPAN: AT LAST WE HAVE A CHAMPION
DAY-1 VERDICT: Logician lined himself up for the Leger with a smooth display. Frankie Dettori didn’t have to be hard on him, and it was a case of ‘beat nothing well,’ with the lanky, sweating Constantinople in second.
The then Leger favourite Japan was asked to show speed as well as stamina over 1m 2f in the International, and he did exactly that in beating so-called world champion Crystal Ocean at weight for age, and may now take in the Irish Champion Stakes.
I never subscribed to the Press histrionics about Crystal Ocean. He was level peggings on 127 with Enable in my book and has now been beaten on the line for strength and will by both Enable and Japan.
They are claiming the world title a second time because Crystal Ocean gave weight away but, again, he didn’t win, and the weight is a legitimate age concession.
All the Crystal Ocean lemmings can expect is for Japan to grow further away from him, as you would expect of a super-progressive three-year-old. Japan needs further, so would likely be capable of beating Crystal Ocean at levels come Arc day over 1m 4f.
That he still gets a concession will irk them and they will demand a change in the system, and those annual league tables will claim the world title for Crystal Ocean after a third consecutive defeat! Come on, you guys: no prizes for second.
If she comes through her Yorkshire Oaks intact today, Enable’s biggest Arc threat is now Japan. At long last we have a champion three-year-old! The International win was one of Aidan O’Brien’s finest training feats, one of Ryan Moore’s great rides.

LOWTHER BEACH PARTY INVITATION
1.55 York (6f Lowther Stakes) Four winners out of the last six were placed in the Albany or the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. Liberty Beach, the Queen Mary fourth, tries six furlongs now but looks well up to it.
She has since won at a lower level at Sandown and at Goodwood in the Molecomb, though the eighth filly home at Ascot, Flippa The Strippa, was disappointing at Goodwood, down in grade.
Celtic Beauty, the Albany runner-up, was tongue-tied and dropped to a maiden to score at Naas on the last day, and Precious Moments (Albany fifth) has been beaten twice.
It all casts a shadow over the supplemented Under The Stars who beat the Albany third last month before that one was well outclassed in Sunday’s Morny.
Maybe her stablemate Nasaiym can step up. The filly she beat a neck at Newbury was a five-lengths winner next time.
Wejdan ran through a big Newbury field on the debut and was entered for the Cheveley Park immediately afterwards. She has to beat Liberty Beach’s greater experience but ‘could be anything.’
STAY ON THE BEACH AT BETDAQ 15.0
2.25 York (6f Sales race) Chances are you want a high stall (see above) and one of the usual suspects on your side: Richard Fahey, William Haggas, Richard Hannon, Kevin Ryan, who have shared out the last nine renewals of this race. Mum’s Tipple or Three Coins?
Mum’s Tipple has raced only once, and in five of the last six seasons the winner had run four or five times (4544456) before winning. Once-raced winners are 0-8.
That hits on Three Coins again, though his best form seems to be on the soft, with his sire having double the strike rate for his progeny on soft than on good ground. Piece Of Paradise also seems to want some cut.
The 15.0 BETDAQ offer Sword Beach (stall 17) is still a maiden but, despite a poor draw, might have caught the prolific Governor Of Punjab in another stride at Goodwood.
Despite the strong stats against them, low numbers have won this race twice in the last three seasons, and William Haggas, the trainer of St Ives, has landed a hat-trick in this (2013-15). St Ives looked big at 21.0 this morning.
KENT A HANDICAP STAR FOR FRANKIE
3.00 York (1m handicap) David Barron continues in the doldrums. Despite a gamble down to 8-1, Gunmetal was never seen with a chance yesterday, so I can’t have Kynren, who in any case is an expensive big-race bridesmaid with form figures of 3203200220, second in this race last year; second in the Lincoln, second in the Victoria Cup. Could run second, of course, but no value for a place at the price.
Baltic Baron has the same seconditis, a dread disease punters should avoid: 22342422020. Sometimes they win, but look how many times you have to bet!
Vale Of Kent (BETDAQ 11.0 taken) could be a third handicapper in recent days to take a leap forward, in the hoofprints of Kings Advice (same stable) and Dakota Gold.
After a good run, unfancied on the soft ground, in the Royal Hunt Cup, Frankie Dettori put the Kodiac colt’s courage to good use in the Bunbury Cup and went close in the Golden Mile at Goodwood, pipped by a a Group horse in a handicap. Back to 7f today, back with Frankie, back on a sound surface. Back him!
What’s The Story beat last year’s third in this, Firmament, here at York in the Spring but Love Dreams was fourth, so Mark Johnston should know all about the form.
Bookies took some decent money about Blackheath last night, yet he opened around 20-1 in the BETDAQ orange. He stepped up when raised a furlong from sprinting, but was hampered twice at Goodwood (who isn’t), and is interesting here off a light weight with Paul Hanagan booked.
ENABLE LONG ODDS ON FOR THE 12
3.35 York (1m 4f Yorkshire Oaks) At long-odds-on Enable, we can only watch her bid for 12 wins in a row. Like the Crystal Ocean saga, we have Magical second to Enable twice and likely second again.
There is no Anapurna: I thought it a bit strange to see her in the decs; probably there in case anything went wrong with Enable.
Odd results can happen in a small field: while Frankie has another Enable stablemate, Lah Ti Dar, to keep them honest, Ryan Moore has South Sea Pearl to make the running and apply pressure to Enable so that Magical can challenge late.
THE SEARCH IS OVER: IT’S FROSTY
4.15 York (1m 4f Galtres Stakes) Three-year-olds have won nine out of 10, and punters think that the Irish have it covered with Curragh Oaks fourth Search For A Song (Dermot Weld) and Frosty (Aidan O’Brien), sister to Winter.
But Frankellina and Love So Deep have both finished about the same distance behind Star Catcher as Search For A Song. Further significance there is that Bella Vita and Shambolic were two and three lengths behind Love So Deep at Newmarket.
It suggests that everybody knows everybody else, except for 6.6 BETDAQ offer Frosty, who was eyecatching on her belated recent return, and could come through and catch them all, with Ryan Moore back to his best yesterday.
MUB THE HUB OF JAMES DOYLE’S DAY
4.50 York (7f fillies) Three-year-olds win again (8-10) and stalls 8-17 have lost only once in the decade.
That gives us a short list of Mubtasimah (James Doyle in form), Chaleur, Lyzbeth, Divinity and Stay Classy but the second-season animals are heavily outnumbered today.
Agincourt can’t be left out, with her trainer, David O’Meara, one of the top five at this meeting, better off with Breathtaking Look though she beat that one here at York over CD in May.
Clon Coulis has the big-field experience, beaten a nose in the Royal Hunt Cup, and a tasty 16.0 for a Jamie Spencer late finish this afternoon. My main aim is to get a bit of place money on, as the mare is already a Fortune Cookies win bet.
