11-1 WINNER ALL IN A DAY’S PROFIT FOR DAQMAN: Eric The Grey (WON 11-1) was sent down from Yorkshire to Windsor yesterday and pulled clear of his rivals for another Daqman long-odds winner. He also gave Prince Regal (WON 5-1) for a 22-point profit on the day.
THE BIG SATURDAY SHOW AT ASCOT: Daqman was in similar form on Saturday, as ever at the weekends, winning 27 points overall, thanks to three winners, including Astaire (WON 8-1, Middle Park Stakes). Now here’s his first look at Ascot’s Champions Day on Saturday.
CHAMPIONS DAY PREVIEW
Was he a Group horse in a handicap? Mass Rally, impressive winner of the class-2 handicap at York on Saturday, has eaten up well and is on course for the Group-2 Champions Sprint at the big Ascot meeting, one of 18 acceptors.
Mass Rally ran about 109 rating on the Knavesmire, which would put him within a length or so of the likely championship favourite, Maarek, who has also hit form recently, winning the Abbaye at the Arc meeting at Longchamp.
Maarek was last year’s winner of this championship-sprint finale. Second, third and eighth that day, Hawkeyethenoo, Sirius Prospect and Slade Power are scheduled to reoppose
But Mass Rally looks a stone better horse since winning last year’s Ayr Silver Cup on heavy ground, and gets a lower quote on Ladbrokes than elsewhere, often a good guide.
By this stage of the season, recent form is a big help. The last four winners had all been in the frame in September.
But be warned that it’s the one race on Saturday likely to produce a turn-up: only one favourite has won in the last decade, which has seen success at 20-1, 12-1, 11-1, 9-1 and 8-1.
When you check the markets for Saturday, another eyecatcher is the shorter odds Ladbrokes offer about Ballydoyle’s Ernest Hemingway – one of 15 left in the Long Distance Cup – despite the Galileo colt’s recent lapses and seeming preference for a sound surface.
Record-breaking champion Irish jockey, Joseph O’Brien, tipped him up as a St Leger colt when he won a Group-3 at The Curragh in midsummer, but he took in another Group 3 before being an odds-on flop, after sweating up, in the Irish St Leger trial.
In the Curragh Leger itself he ran like a bridle horse but, in fact, was back more or less on song, though beaten, raising his game a good five lengths to run close to his old rival, Royal Diamond. Maybe Saturday’s 2m will now suit.
TODAY’S RACING
Not sure about tipping winners. Finding a runner is becoming odds-against.
After the crazy scenes with non runners yesterday – there are already plenty on today’s cards with Newcastle approaching 20.
Twitter is becoming an invaluable source of information for race fans – particularly when you have a pro-active clerk of the course such as James Armstrong at Newcastle.
He tweeted this morning:
James Armstrong @JRFArmstrong
Remained dry since 6am this morn @NewcastleRaces Going still SOFT, HEAVY in pls. 5.3 on stick. Overcast still & cool.
So clearly testing conditions at the north east venue and, so far at least, John Gosden has left in his two two-year-olds for the opening races on the card.
Beyond Smart is trading around 1.54 for the opener after his promising debut fourth in a big field at Haydock – but can’t really be touched at that price with the going question mark. I’m only interested in horses with PROVEN experience on – let’s call it heavy ground – especially if playing at short odds.
With this in mind, and as ever a look at the BETDAQ prices I am sweet on the chances of Uncle Brit in the finale. If there’s more rain no problem – in fact the more the better. He is trading at around 11 on the win market which looks very generous.
He came close to winning on heavy ground at Carlisle when just pipped a neck and showed his current well being when beating another of today’s rivals, Royal Holiday, here last time out. Uncle Brit has only had the three starts so far this season so comes here a relatively fresh horse.
In the opener at Kempton tonight Sequined sets the form standard for Godolphin after a promising debut third at the track but with Gosden and Hannon trained debutants in opposition is not one you’d want to be taking too short a price about.
Missouri Spirit looks a good option in the 6.10 at Kempton. He brings some reasonable placed form from the turf and the Kevin Ryan stable are still on cloud nine after their Group 1 success with Astaire on Saturday (and had another winner on Monday).
