DAQMAN SPIES 5-2 WINNER FOR A PROFIT ON THE DAY: Our Man In Havana, which helped make the reputation of its star Alec Guinness, is a film from the Graham Greene book about a vacuum-cleaner salesman who became a spy. Yesterday the horse of that name helped Daqman clean up! He showed a profit on the day to recommended stakes from Our Man In Havana (WON 5-2).
AND HE DIGS UP THE SECRET OF ROYAL ASCOT LOSERS: Daqman has a salutary follow-up to his Fortune Cookie horses for the future, which included Royal Ascot winners in yesterday’s list. He now finds that placed horses over the five days at the royal meeting have ‘an abysmal record’, except for a minority of events or, at least, that’s what happened last year. FORGET THE ASCOT PLACED HORSES
Follow Royal Ascot horses. That’s an old adage which could serve you well for the rest of the season but only for certain winners (see yesterday’s Fortune Cookies) and for some ‘hidden horses’ in the ruck, not in the frame (watch this space!)
In fact, last year’s results of horses placed at the meeting without winning shows an abysmal return: 18 of them have produced only one future winner or none at all!
So a simplistic approach of backing those who got nearest to the winners (many of them overbet) has been a very expensive failure.
Two races made up for it with a high percentage of success from very few subsequent runners, the Diamond Jubilee, with four wins from six to date, and the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes with five from seven.

SMALLER FISH FOR THE BOYS IN BLUE
⭕ 1.35 Brighton Nearly a week on from Real World’s impressive Royal Ascot victory in the Royal Hunt Cup (Group horse in handicap and all that) Saeed bin Suroor will hopefully enjoy success with a much smaller fish at Brighton this afternoon in the shape of Lubna in the median auction stakes.
The three-year-old failed to show much in her first two efforts at Newcastle on the all-weather and on soft ground at Beverley but her latest effort at Kempton was much more like it. Despite being up in class and going off at 40/1 she ran a big race to take fourth behind debutant winner Wishaah.
The BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE is suggesting something of a match here between her and Mr Poy who has become disappointing and is now fitted with first time blinkers in an effort to reverse that slide.
He also has a good effort at Kempton to his name but failed to build on that when a beaten favourite on his return to the course earlier this month and doesn’t look the most reliable character.
BOUGHEY TO HIT RIGHT NOTES
⭕ 2.10 Brighton George Boughey’s success this season has been one of the headlines so far, especially with his two-year-olds.
He may strike with three-year-old Almadrina here. The filly is totally unexposed and might well be lurking off a decent handicap mark. She went off favourite on her handicap debut at Lingfield in a better race and although only sixth it was an improved effort and this certainly won’t take much winning.
Finvarra looks the danger after his course and distance win last week and if none the worse for that should go close again, despite the 5lb penalty.
CLOUDS ARE CLEAR
⭕ 5.00 Newbury Not the best card ever staged by the Berkshire venue which usually sets the bar high.
Polar Cloud looks the bet on the card in the opener. The Heather Main trained runner has been plying his trade on the all-weather to some effect too, winning at Newcastle two starts ago.
The grey has only faced grass once before and didn’t run badly. He is taken to see off Suns Up Guns Up whose only previous win has come on the all-weather.
