IRISH OAKS THE WEEKEND STAND-OUT: Another glut of Saturday meetings in England but Daqman will preview the Irish Oaks on a day of Group 1 and Group 2 the Curragh.
EIGHT-MEETING SATURDAY GLUT
Crowds crashed on Super Saturday. They were down up to 26% (Ascot), and more than 12,000 overall. It was just four days ago that we had York, Chester, Ascot and Newmarket – to name just the main meetings – in one indigestible glut of big handicaps and Group races.
This Saturday? Same again, only more so: another ‘super’ Saturday of 55 races at eight English meetings from 1.15 pm to 9 o’clock. Who wants them?
Racegoers: Certainly not if last Saturday’s figures are anything to go by. If you live in Newmarket, why go to Ascot? You’d do that only when there’s no racing nearer home.
Equally, you had to choose between York and Chester for your northern fare, but this Saturday – believe it or not – there’s racing all points North, and you have to decide between Chester, Doncaster, Haydock, Market Rasen and Ripon plus, a bit more far flung, Cartmel.
If the aim is to give racegoers picnic days at their local meetings, what are the racetracks doing charging an arm and a leg to get into the enclosures?
Cost: Racegoers clearly feel they won’t be held to ransom, nor can many of them afford the prices for food and drinks at a time when we are on the cliff-edge of another recession.
With petrol prices through the roof and trains on limited services on sweltering hot days, who wants the expense and the aggro.
Betting: It’s simply impossible to do justice to 55 races as a tipster or a punter. Racing becomes bingo for the pinsticker.
Where are your favourite horses running on Saturday? If they are spread around York, Chester, Ascot and Newmarket, why not stay at home so that you can see them all them on the box or on your computer!
They seek him here.. The wooing of racegoers is transparently cynical, with ‘attractions’ for children, a style show like an open-air dating agency, and The Latest Celebrity doing the rounds.
Telly. The absurdity of it all is terrestrial TV at three meetings, telling us by definition that we can see all the racing from our armchair but urging us to ‘go racing’.
Reserve a table on the lawn and, if you’re lucky, you’ll meet Oli Bell forcing a smile, and telling you how much you are enjoying yourself.
Hoofnote: There is one Flat-race meeting in England on Sunday.. It must be good! But no, the best race is a class-3 handicap; the rest are class-5 and class-6 ‘events’.
THE POWER OF TON-UP HOLLIE
⭕ 6.20 Chelmsford in the cool of the evening. That sounds better. And the Essex track has a scoop over the grass tracks today: it features the first jockey to reach 100 this season.
Hollie Doyle’s ton – landed at Wolverhampton last night – is three days ahead of her 2021 tally when she finished on 172.
Doyle, first female to win a Group 1 in Europe (Nashwa in the French Oaks), has ridden for 45 stables this year but far and away her top yard is Archie Watson’s with 74 and she has a similar strike–rate for William Stone (14 winners).
BETDAQ 9.1 value this morning, Excel Power (6.20) for Watson is a ‘hidden horse’ today after stepping up from an easy hat-trick for Doyle, which started here at Chelmsford in November, and being buried in class-2 contests at Epsom and Ascot (the Royal Hunt Cup).
Karibana broke a sequence of 10 defeats when blinkers made the difference here the last day but will they work again? Melody of Life is in form but at a lower level.
Inigo Jones is on a losing run going back to last April but has been dropped only 3lb in the meantime.
⭕ 7.50 Chelmsford Frankie Dettori might get another sabbatical if he can’t win for Team Gosden on Storm Castle, who returned full of promise at Windsor last month, and has been working well on the Newmarket gallops. Betdaq Betting Exchange 3.05.
I’M BACKING RED FOR IN-FORM ED
⭕ 3.40 Beverley Ed Dunlop gave Hollie Doyle her winner last night and, though he’s not a trainer I like, has found an opportunity for Red Verdon.
Red Verdon is dropped to class 3 for the first time since October, 2017, and is 8lb lower compared to this time last year, when he won a Sandown Listed at today’s trip.
This season we’ve seen him in the John Porter, the Jockey Club Stakes and the Northumberland Plate.
Just Hubert is a Goodwood horse and has scored only once (soft ground) elsewhere since September, 2019. Midrarr is a class-4 filly trying for better after wind surgery (twice).
Patient Dream’s Flat record is at around 1m 2f. Smart Champion has been well below par (0-13) and you have to go back four years to Dash of Spice’s winning form.
