DANTE RATES REALLY HOT THIS YEAR
Last chance saloon. The trials season is almost over, but it goes out with a bang, with the top Derby and Oaks tests on the Knavesmire this week, the Musidora for fillies and the Dante for colts.
Is that how it is? Are those with the potential lined up at York, and do these two races really produce the Classic double at Epsom? Daqman previews today, then brings you his expert analysis, race by race, horse by horse, as the week unfolds.
3.35 York, tomorrow (Musidora Stakes) The last three winners of this have been disappointing (overall form afterwards 1-9) but Star Of Seville (2015) went on to win the French Oaks, the Prix de Diane.
On subsequent results, Michael Bell’s Epsom Oaks winner Sariska (2009) was the best Musidora winner of the last decade.
Three of the four most recent winners went to post off 105, 108 and 112. There’s nothing like that among this year’s acceptors (101 the highest) but the reverse is the case with the Dante, where Too Darn Hot (126), Line Of Duty (114) and Japan (111) are rated as high or higher than the last four winners, including Golden Horn and Roaring Lion, and are among the first six in the Epsom betting

3.00 York, Thursday (Dante Stakes) John Gosden (Too Darn Hot) has won three of the last four Dantes. In fact, he was landing a hat-trick when Roaring Lion scored last year, as the trainer was not represented in 2017.
He’s won with two Derby winners, Benny The Dip (1997) and Golden Horn (2015), while Aidan O’Brien, who saddles Japan, has won four times but only Cape Blanco (Irish Derby) was a champion.
Sir Michael Stoute (Almania) has scored in six Dantes, winning the Epsom Derby with Shahrastani (beat Dancing Brave in the 1986 Derby) and North Light in 2004.
KEY draw again? Yes, the five with outside draws have seriously reduced chances. Stalls 1 to 7 have won nine out of 10.
FLIPPA THE STRIPPA THE NAPPA
3.00 Chepstow Very little form to go on here in this novice auction event which won’t take much winning.
Gold Venture is a winner without a penalty for her debut success which came in a Redcar seller. She did the job nicely and will only improve but it’s unlikely that selling form will be good enough here.
Both Richard Hannon and Charlie Hills have runners who have had experience and could be the pair to concentrate on. Hannon’s Audio finished third on debut at Kempton and then was beaten two necks into third at Brighton when sent off favourite. He was only headed in the dying stages that day but Chepstow is an undulating course, like Brighton.
Preference has to go to the Charlie Hills trained Flippa The Strippa who ran well on debut when third at Nottingham when sent off a 16/1 shot. The runner-up that day was Daddies Diva who was even bigger at 100/1 but proved that run was no fluke and gave the form a boost when winning next time out back at Nottingham.
3.20 Beverley A hugely competitive sprint handicap and as always at Beverley the starting point has to be the draw.
Qaaraat has fared well in box four and his trainer Antony Brittain has knocked in two winners from his last seven runners. He’s only won once on the turf but has been running well on the all-weather and is still a relative youngster in terms of this race.
I’ll go each-way with a WIN 20 stake on BOTH the BETDAQ win and place markets at 9.6 and 3.05 respectively (at the time of writing).
3.30 Chepstow I like the top weight The Groove here. He ran a big race at Salisbury last time out under today’s pilot 7lb claimer Gina Mangan and the partnership might well be able to go one better to repeat trainer David Evans’ win in the race 12 months ago.
Trotter was only beaten a head at Windsor last time out but has gone up 2lb for that run and his overall profile of 1 win from 20 (and that came on the all-weather) suggests you can afford not to be on when/if he next wins.
