DAQMAN STRIKES FOR NAPS AND LAYS DOUBLES: Daqman is careful. Daqman is cunning. But, now and then, particularly after winning for four days in a week, he attacks the layers with supernaps (there are two today) and he tries to step up on his own low-level lays record of two out of three. Full details below but the lays and the naps relate to these races
1.20 Newcastle LAY the favourite, BACK 4.1 shot from in-form yard.
3.15 Lingfield Sole weekday runner for hot stable. Best of the day.
3.45 Lingfield Another Supernap strike. Another in-form yard.
4.05 Newcastle LAY the favourite, BACK 6.0 shot to bounce back.
CADERYN COULD BOB UP HERE
1.20 Newcastle Michael Scudamore is 4-9 at Newcastle and Caderyn could upset the short-priced favourite, maiden bridesmaid Bob Mahler, who always seems to find one or two too good.
The bumper winner Caderyn (4.2 offers) showed his stamina potential on the last day, staying on well after more than 2m 3f on heavy ground at Chepstow.
He is by Flemensfirth, which speak volumes enough. But he is half-brother to a Pertemps Hurdle (3m) runner-up, his dam a half-sister to the classy Geos.
2.05 Lingfield The Game Is A Foot attempts a Lingfield hat-trick here, a four-timer altogether after opening his winter account at Plumpton in November a stone lower than today.
But I just wonder if front-running Clayton, who has scored in higher class, can hang on here, with the Gary Moore stable having won three out of four, still standing, at Plumpton yesterday. Clayton took over as favourite (3.1) this morning.
SNOWDEN HAS FOUND HIS FORM
3.15 Lingfield Jamie Snowden’s stable form in the last seven days is 211322, still standing, and Lostnfound is his only other runner this week until Saturday.
Though only two finished when the mare won at Uttoxeter on the last day, the runner-up scored either side of that race, most recently in a big-field handicap.
3.25 Southwell Bingo George (31.0 on BETDAQ) has dropped back to a mark with the right kind of draw (stall 1) which saw him sluice up here at Southwell in October (stall 3), and this is the time of year for the Mark Rimell yard.
Jack Blane (5.1 offers) ran wide from a 13 draw over a furlong less, also at Southwell just a week ago. Now in stall 3.
He finished well as if coming to form and was an unlucky loser at today’s trip when also well drawn at Lingfield in November, beaten a neck when impeded in his run 50 yards out.
WAY NOW OPEN FOR BRIDGE
3.45 Lingfield Chris Gordon’s is another yard in flying form right now, with figures in the last 13 days of 121010141, still standing.
Tara Bridge scored at Stratford last Spring in a two-horse finish to a chase that doesn’t amount to much.
But he divided two previous winners when reappearing over hurdles at Plumpton three weeks ago and could strike while the iron’s hot.
Mr. Muddle is a bridesmaid, eight times placed since he won at Plumpton nearly three years ago. Ruby Rambler has not placed in a chase and it’s hard to appreciate her handicap mark.
Finnegan’s Garden and Weyburn are oddities here: never even been placed over 2m, running most of their races half a mile further, and Weyburn prefers better ground.
Finnegan’s Garden travels strongly in his races and, with a featherweight here, could be the one to give Tara Bridge most to do, despite being 10lb wrong at the weights.
FOLLOW THE MODULUS PUNT
4.05 Newcastle Lord County, a shade of odds on in the BETDAQ orange this morning, landed us a 12-1 winner on Friday when he took advantage of a slow-run race.
But not many succeed in ducking under the handicapper’s radar, and not many can put back-to-back wins together at this level.
To carry a penalty just four days later suggests that connections fear there is not much improvement to come and they will have to strike quickly (here’s that ‘hot iron’ analogy again).
One able to put a string of successes together is Modulus, who might have landed five in a row but, ironically, returned to the track too quickly after scoring last February.
Following a bigger break, he then bounced back, launching a hat-trick by winning over CD here at Newcastle on heavy ground.
Modulus was backed in from 7-1 to 9-2 with bookmakers last night, which recommends his fitness after two runs back in the autumn, both in a higher grade.
That’s reduced his rating nicely to a mark just 2lb higher than his last win in the treble. He was 5.5 on BETDAQ, early mouse.
