GIVE US A BREAK! Today is Jumps only to give Flat jockeys a break but poor entries at Goodwood this weekend will ensure many riders will miss out anyway!

5 RUNNERS HARDLY A CELEBRATION

The ruination of racing. Tt’s happening all the time now, and Goodwood Saturday is another warning flag.

It’s like everything else in England: the sirens are sounding but the authorities are trying to drown out the noise with their louder ‘la, la, la, la’ (hands over their ears).

If you think that’s like a children’s playground, then you’ve forgotten what the House Commons is like; most children are better behaved and more responsible. Here’s the reason in advance why the crowds will stay away from Goodwood this weekend:

March Stakes £100,000 Group 3; only seven entries paying £1,000 each when there are prizes down the line so that even the sixth horse home gets £1,350.

Celebration Mile £125,000 Group 2 but only 17 were entered and just FIVE have been declared for Saturday; the smallest-ever field is likely. Prizes down to the sixth horse home (£1,687.50), with the winner to receive £70,887.50.

It would be churlish (without going into fixture logistics) to say we’ve only just had a Goodwood meeting but that’s how the punter will see it, with three more days there (Friday to Sunday) and such a paucity of big-race runners.

Fixture numbers and logistics must be re-examined and lumps cut out, as in any body (including the body politic) which has gone wrong and needs a drastic cure.

.. AND 2 RUNNERS HARDLY A RACE!

Just two runners. That’s all there is in both the opener at Worcester today and the opener at Fontwell, jumps meetings which, along with Worcester, are being staged to give Flat jockeys a day off.

Despite watering, there are also two races of three runners each at Fontwell, one with four, one with five; 33 all day on a seven-race card.

Some 18 of 20 races at the three Jumps meetings have single-figure declared; so just two races with double-figure fields, and only eight out of the 20 with the full each-way eight or more!

⭕ 2.15 Bangor Donald McCain and leading jockey Brian Hughes – we napped his 57th winner of the season yesterday – landed a four-timer at Bangor (4-6) last week, and I fancy their chances with Sweet Auburn there today.

Hughes is riding at 25% overall but his current form is a remarkable 8-14 since that day he went to Bangor!

Overnight odds-on favourite, Masked Matgil, hasn’t jumped a fence in public and her form has been secured in slow-run bumpers, wearing a tongue-tie. Point winner Sweet Auburn has won when fresh.

Betdaq Betting Exchange 2.98 Sweet Auburn

⭕ 3.30 Worcester Christopher Kellett produced one out of the blue at Carlisle on Friday, when Blistering Barney (16-1) made all on the Flat at Carlisle.

Few races lend themselves to an each-way bet or a place bet today but this open-looking 11-runner mares’ handicap hurdle contains another Kellett outsider.

To be ridden by the smart Charlie Todd, Dorette, who has had a run back recently, won a similar hurdle over a similar trip in similar conditions at Uttoxeter last June, backed in to 9-1.

BETDAQ value 46.0 Dorette

REWARD FOR 5.4 BETDAQ VALUE

⭕ 7.00 Fontwell Anthony Honeyball has a 50% record when teaming up with 3lb-claiming Ben Godfrey at Fontwell.

The trainer has three runners there today but Godfrey’s sole mount is Rubys Reward, for whom a wind op and an 87-day break could restore the form which saw her score an easy success over the CD here in the Spring.

Rubys Reward gets 15lb from Viking Ruby (0-11 since November 2020) and 19lb from Presenting Yeats, who was reluctant to race the last day and was ‘left many lengths’ in a four-horse race.

Belle Jour has won only a steeplechase and is 0-10 over hurdles, and Robbie Dazzler is a seven-race maiden who has been very easy to back at huge odds every time.

BETDAQ value 5.4 Rubys Reward (nap)

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
