50 UP! STAMP HILL WON 50-1 (64.0 BETDAQ) Saturday
50 UP! ROLY POLY WON 16/5 (6.8 BETDAQ) Sunday
50 UP! WHISKEY SOUR WON 16-1 (32.0 BETDAQ) Monday
TRIPLE COUP HELPS THUMP PRICEWISE 5-0: Whiskey Sour’s big win took Daqman’s score in the three days to 5-0 over Pricewise for a 59-10 lead overall, with now a 265-point gap between them to single-unit level stakes. He also had a banker nap on Le Richebourg (WON 4-9) from a morning 10-11 on BETDAQ, landing the gamble by five lengths and 16 lengths in the very first Galway race of the festival.
154 POINTS CARRIED OVER TO GOODWOOD: It took Daqman’s pofit in those three days to 154 points as Goodwood launches today. Daqman v Pricewise: 1.50, 2.25, 3.00, 3.35 Goodwood and 7.40 Galway. And there are four more win-50 bets.
I SEE A CUP SHOCK ON THE SKYLINE
3.35 Goodwood Cup Big Orange bids to become the first horse in more than 200 years to land a hat-trick in this race, helped by lack of a penalty from his Ascot Gold Cup triumph now that it has been raised to Group 1.
But you wouldn’t think it was a Group 1 on the form. Other than Big Orange, only High Jinx and Wicklow Brave have won at this level, unless you count Sheikhzayedroad’s Grade 1 at Woodbine. All three of these are eight or nine years old.
Half a dozen in the field have already been beaten by Big Orange, including last year’s placed horses, the old boys Pallasator (also eight), Sheikhzayedroad and Wicklow Brave.
The race is crying out for an improver. Higher Power is now better than his five lengths beating by Big Orange at Sandown but officially has 11lb to find. Sweet Selection has stepped out of handicaps but is even further behind in the ratings.
That leaves you with the quirky US Army Ranger, or the unexposed three-year-olds Stradivarius and Desert Skyline.
Stradivarius beat Desert Skyline in the Queen’s Vase but that wily old warrior of the training ranks, David Elsworth, immediately supplemented Skyline for today’s race in first-time cheekpieces.
A three-year-old hasn’t won this since 1973 but I doubt there’s been such a log jam of old half-dead wood as in this field today.
Big Orange must be placed but the Classic generation has just thrashed the older horses in the King George and, at a difference of 13lb, one of well-drawn Stradivarius (11.5 BETDAQ offers) and Desert Skyline (32.0) could stop the even-money favourite.
Big Orange could turn out to be value at even money, such is his seeming dominance over the older horses.! But it would be a first banker for me at that price in such a big field.
I could cover with a saver Big Orange but I will ‘cheat’ and put him in my Daq Multiples. There are many more than three ways of winning in every race on the exchange.
GARCIA CAN TAKE A LEAP FORWARD
1.50 Goodwood No outright favourite has won, as horses aged four and five dominate. No older horse got a look-in. Low-drawn runners usually traffic jammed the bends and only two in stalls lower than nine have scored in the decade.
Eddystone Rock (from 5) has seemingly been unlucky in big handicaps the last twice but may be making his own trouble. He’s on a losing run of eight gets no help from the handicapper.
He started 20-1 and 50-1 in those big handicaps, which suggests that they would have felt lucky to be placed. The difference today is that Pricewise has tipped him. He may win but I am happy to oppose the lemmings who will make him a shorter price here.
UAE Prince (badly drawn that day but beginning to be disappointing) and Garcia finished in front of him at York. Both have won on good to soft.
Winner of four in a row last term, Baydar hasn’t been asked a question with the ground against him until now. Like eEddystone Rock, he’s been starting at fancy prices. A move in the market today would be genuine, as opposed to not Rock solid.
Sir Michael Stoute has hired champion jockeys for his pair Abdon (first-time cheekpieces) and Khairaat, disappointined favourite at Royal Ascot after a hnarsh handicap rise.
I decided t hat Garcia (6.0) looked yet anot her well palced by Riuchard Fahey and likely to make a leap forward after only seven races. Ryan Moore in the saddle.
BERGER MAY HAVE THEM ON TOAST
2.25 Goodwood (Vintage Stakes) Aidan O’Brien (Seahenge, the only Group-entered runner) has won two of the last three runnings of this, both hot favourite, the best of the pair, Highland Reel!
Seahenge was very green in his maiden and the hill finish might be a worry on that score today. Zaman is he form horse, having beaten the subsequent Robert Papin winner, Unfortunately, at Pontefract but a bit of a worry that Charlie Appleby reaches for the blinkers on his fifth start.
Mildenberger (6.6 in the BETDAQ orange this morning). is Mark Johnston’s first runner at his favourite festival. He’s been very strong in the finish for his two wins out of two, and could outstay the speed horses. A win-and-place-cover price.
GET READY TO ACLAIM DETTORI..
3.00 Goodwood (Lennox Stakes) Limato’s losing run could continue here because of the ease in the ground. Check it out.
Badly hampered when Limato was third in the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot, Aclaim has Frankie Dettori up for he first time since his impressive Newmarket win in October and will be more at home over this 7f. Tasty at 12.5 in the BETDAQ orange early mouse.
Three-year-olds have landed five out of 10 here (no winner over the age of five), and the track should suit 8.0 offer Spirit Of Valor’s style of running, if he can defy stall 10 and got a good early position.
3.10 Beverley Choosey has improved a lot for a much-needed first run, and is a rare runner for the Limato stable at this course. Well drawn, too, and 4.0 on BETDAQ
7.40 Galway The 9.0 BETDAQ bet, Tandem, could be a first Galway winner at this festival for its champion, Dermot Weld, He has it to do at the weights to confirm Leopardstown form with Windsor Beach but had the race won a long way out that day.
Willie Mullins landed me a big winner yesterday and he has Declan McDonough aboard Riven Light. They are 2-3 in combo but this is a horse who’s had his troubles and so hard to trust as favourie.
