GLORIOUS DAY FOR DASHING DETTORI: Goodwood opens today with Frankie Dettori’s Ascot Gold Cup winner defending his crown and a battle of the generations with Dettori again, this time trying to outsmart the Greenham Stakes winner.

BUICK KEEPS FAITH WITH NAVELLO

⭕ 1.40 Goodwood (5f handicap) 90% of winners in the decade have come from a single-figure draw, so Lord Riddiford, who has won this the last twice from gates 7 and 2, has it all to do to complete the hat–trick out of 15.

Designer, Dream Composer, Existent, Raasel and Vintage Clarets are all well drawn and like some cut in the ground.

Dream Composer and Raasel are CD winners from the right age group but Navello (from the one stall) and Whenthedealinsdone (10), with William Buick and Oisin Murphy doing the steering, are in the right weights area.

Buick rode Navello at this meeting last year but failed to get a clear run on George Boughey’s then three-year-old. Trainer, horse and jockey are all in fine form for a revenge run this time round.

Raasel was neck runner-up in the King George Group-2 sprint at the meeting last year and his Goodwood form is 112.

Second run in cheekpieces after fourth in a big-field Ascot handicap (good to soft) the last day; hampered two out.

BETDAQ value 5.0 Raasel, 9.0 Navello

OUTBREAK OF JOHNSTON WINNERS?

⭕ 2.50 Goodwood (1m 2f Chesterfield Cup) Charlie Johnston helped his father, Mark, finish their joint tenure with a 14-1 winner in this last year, and has made no secret of his intentions to follow the family tradition at Goodwood this week.

So it is that Outbreak catches the eye among the low numbers, while one-time French Guineas fourth for Andrew Fabre, Ancient Rome, has his first outing for Charles Hills under late-swoop king, Jamie Spencer.

Eagle’s Way was just run out of it on his return to the track at York five days ago. He has a history of putting a hat-trick together in two weeks so is unlikely to bounce.

Key race for the Chesterfield is the John Smith’s Cup at York – 17 days back – when Pride Of America had Haunted Dream back in third and Millebosc in seventh.

Haunted Dream is better off with Pride Of America from that race and with Lord Protector from Sandown in early July; Paradias 5th; Moktasaab 11th (not clear run).

Betdaq Betting Exchange check market moves on these earlier offers: 4.8 Millebosc, 5.4 Eagle’s Way, 10.5 Pride Of America, 11.5 Lord Protector, 14.5 Haunted Dream, 19 Outbreak, 37 Ancient Rome

KINROSS CAN k.o. GREENHAM COLT

⭕ 4.00 Goodwood (7f Lennox Stakes, Group 2) FORTUNE COOKIE Kinross is one of Frankie Dettori’s goodbye rides at the Glorious meeting.

Dettori won four in a row on the Kingman gelding, including the Foret and the British Champions Sprint, when the easy surfaces suited the son of a Selkirk mare.

Kinross was back to form in the July Cup, battling for the lead at the business end until the ‘monster’ Shaquille charged past.

An Andrew Balding outsider won for the three-year-olds last year for the first time in 10 years, and his Greenham winner, Isaac Shelby, is back to the 7f and give in the ground.

He’s finished close up at Group-1 level since, but can he restore faith in the three-year-olds against older horses; Kinross is twice his age.

Rob Havlin has ridden Audience to a hat-trick bid today, Dettori having ridden him last Spring but never again. Audience won the Criterion at Newmarket in July from Jumby, who drops out of a rematch today.

FRANKIE FOR COURAGE AND CHEEK

⭕ 4.35 Goodwood (2m Goodwood Cup, Group 1) Emily Dickinson wasn’t winning enough for FORTUNE COOKIE status, at least not in the Gold arena.

Back to her preferred softish ground here, we might regret turfing her out, but in this race she is rated behind four of her opponents, even allowing for her filly’s allowance.

The market may be a better guide than any tipster, with the winner SP favourite six years out of seven, which includes the last three of Stradivarius’ four-timer.

Looking for another hot tune from his stable this time around is Frankel’s son, Courage Mon Ami, ridden by Strad’s partner, Frankie Dettori.

Courage, mon punter, but the four-year-old has had only four races in his life and none on turf with cut in the ground, though he won back to back on ‘slow’ man-made surfaces at Newcastle and Kempton.

After the gelding outstayed Coltrane in the Ascot Gold Cup, Dettori can be expected to push them with his usual front-running cheek before turning the tap on full.

But that was on firm and the return match should be the delight of the opening day.

ANOTHER ‘DECISION’ FOR SAFFIE

⭕ 5.35 Goodwood (6f handicap) Here’s the ideal Charlie Johnston runner; an improver, travels strongly; can take over a sprint but stays – and wins – over 7f. It will be hard to stop Kitai landing a hat-trick.

Mottisfont ran well to the 6f point in the Fred Darling then flirted with milers. Ran well in first-time visor, back to today’s trip the last day at Ascot.

Saffie Osborne is the girl for the big occasion these days; rode a hat-trick at York and slammed the Group-3 Valiant Stakes field at Ascot on Saturday, making all on Random Harvest.

Executive Decision (Betdaq Betting Exchange 10.0 this morning) looks primed spot on for this in the Jamie Osborne manner. Liked cut in the ground when with Jessica Harrington.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
