BUILD THE WALL

3.45 Hamilton Not a great days racing but the first betting opportunity of the day also falls in the best race of the day – this class 2 handicap over a mile.

The Tim Easterby trained Balestra is hard to get away from and is expected to reverse places with First Flight who beat him three quarters of a length at Hamilton last time out but was receiving seven pounds. There’s a 4lb swing in the weights today which should be enough to turn the tables.

The filly Whatsthemessage ran well at York last time out when fourth but she looks a little high in the weights after her golden spell last autumn when she won four on the spin.

4.45 Hamilton The Great Wall has done most of his racing on the all-weather but was a revelation at York last time out when only caught close home over seven furlongs.

He raced prominently that day and the drop back to a stiff six here could be perfect for the Michael Appleby trained runner who might find his biggest danger is the Godolphin runner Desert Frost who is dropped 2lb after his recent Lingfield third. The first and second from that race have won again since and Cameron Noble takes off a handy 5lb.

6.45 Chepstow It’s a pot luck kind of day so no more appropriate selection than Pot Luck herself.

This looks a very modest contest and one in which I want to be against the Johnny Murtagh trained favourite Champagne Marengo who looks set to be over-backed for a horse whose form looks pretty average.

The Andrew Balding (8 winners from last 40) trained Pot Luck was very green on debut at Lingfield but got the hang of things late on and it’s entirely possible we’ll see a much improved performance over this longer trip.

The betting already suggests that the Sir Mark Prescott trained Mirabai will need the race.
