CHARTING THE IMPROVERS OF 2017
In with the new. Daqman was straight off the mark on day one of 2017, and is yet again dominating the feature-race scene, 9-4 up on Pricewise of the Racing Post and 35 points in front of him after a three-day long weekend of bets in the challenge, which included:

1.15 Bangor Trainer Sam England had champagne for the new-year celebrations after three winners out of four in the last 10 days of December.
His runner, Cabragh, outstayed the four-time winner On The Road at Sedgefield but a 13-lengths romp first time over fences has caught the eye of the handicapper and he’s up a pound-per-length 13lb.
He tried to get in under the radar by carrying a nominal penalty within seven days but was only fourth when dropped back in trip at Newcastle. The holiday since might put him back on track.
Venetia Williams is flying, too. She had four winners out of six, still standing, at the turn of the year, and she drops Saroque to class-4 level for the first time since December, 2013.
Saroque is 12lb lower than a year ago and 4lb down on the weight he carried for his last sucesss. That was at his favourite track, Exeter, but conditions are right today and he’s had two runs back.
Pithivier is only seven, and should improve on his first chase start at Wetherby, albeit in novice company. It’s the old story: do you bet potential or the form already in the book? He looks well in on hurdles ratings.
Maybe first-time cheekpieces will improve Cafe De Paris, and maybe first-time blinkers will boost Copper Birch. He can be forgiven his flop as favourite on the last day, the run coming too quickly as he, too, tried to get beneath the handicapper’s radar after back-to-back wins in November.
1.45 Bangor Success for Cabragh would point up the chances of On The Road, whom he beat 13 lengths at Sedgefield. On the Road is back to a more suitable trip today, and remains in novice company.
Venetia Williams is again a big danger, with Buttercup performing well enough on her chasing debut at Uttoxeter but known for not showing much at the business end of her races.
You would think the hurdles hat-trick winner Vinegar Hill would need further than this over fences, and Clondaw Draft didn’t seem to take to the bigger obstacles at this time two years ago.
Truckers Glory is with a stable that does well at Bangor. The horse has ran four places in a row without winning; then was three times favourite consecutively.
No wonder the blinkers are applied after just the one win in October. They could well do the trick as the jockey has reported in defeat that there was ‘plenty left under him’.
A win-and-place bet at 6.2 on BETDAQ in an eight-runner race, three potential returns to one for On The Road at 3.8, but I will no doubt have a saver on the favourite if Cabragh romps home.
2.50 Bangor Coincidence backers doubling Buttercup with Cowslip will have to keep an eye on Jamie Moore, who gave Magic Mustard an old ‘Tony McCoy type ride’ over the Bangor course and distance, getting hold of him and showing who’s boss, scoring for the second time in three starts.
A tongue-tie helped him then and it may be the making of Petite Power, on for the first time today. It’s also the first run for this distance winner since he switched stables to the in-form yard of Fergal O’Brien. Yet again, it’s potential versus form, and Magic Mustard is big at 5.7 on BETDAQ because of Petite Power.
JUST ONE HORSE IN THE MIX: 2 FROM 2
3.00 Musselburgh (Kilmany Cup) Mixboy is two out of two over fences and has his conditions on the Edinburgh track today, sole runner for Keith Dalgleish, who trains 50 miles away, and is better known on the Flat.
The stable has a modest strike rate here, as is often the case with a local, and his form in the fortnight is firing blanks or missing strike (three placed without winning).
The Dalgleish 2016-17 chase record looks good on 100%. But, in fact, Mixboy is his only chaser to have run this season, 2-2 with back-to-back sucess in the summer.
Brian Ellison had a winner here on Sunday but has a poor record at Musselburgh overall, and Fair Loch has been hit hard by the handicapper for winning at Ayr.
As a front-runner, he may still be a trade horse and the small field could help him last out to the business end.
Mark Walford is among the winners and Oliver’s Gold is down again to around his winning mark, albeit that was back in the autumn of 2015.
James Bethell has a 50% record at Musselburgh but, like Keith Dalgleish, his chase record this season centres on one horse, Thankyou Very Much (2-4), who loves a sound surface but is up a stone for back-to-back wins in small fields, the first leg here in November.
He gets a stone and a pound from Mixboy but Dalgleish has clearly trained that one for this race, and there are not many unbeaten situations today. Nap.
