BULL’S-EYE BET AMONG FOUR MEETINGS: As racing gets back into gear in the warmer weather, Daqman picks the quality race at each of four meetings today: Ludlow, Naas, Newcastle and Southwell. He finds a nap and a win-50 bull’s-eye bet.
NOTIONS COULD PICK THE POCKET
⭕ 1.05 Naas ‘A Grade-2 novice hurdle of 2m 4f, with likely favourite Inthepocket making his first appearance since scoring over 2m at Wexford in October.
A chaser in embryo, Inthepocket should relish the extra half-mile, but has to overcome a Gordon Elliott trident attack of Absolute Notions, Three Card Brag and Deeply Superficial,
By Milan out of a Beneficial mare, Absolute Notions was a €29,000 foal but solid as a three-year-old for €370,000, and has not let the new owner down so far.
Despite showing ‘absolutely nothing’ at home, his back-to-back wins in a bumper and a maiden hurdle – both at Punchestown – have left 35 others in his wake.
Deeply Superficial won well at Galway under Davy Russell. Like Frankie Dettori’s retirement, Davy’s doesn’t come as a shock but, like Frankie’s, will leave a huge gap in terms of jockeyship and character we’ve known and respected for many years.
BETDAQ value 4.6 Absolute Notions
THIS WILL WORK IF HE GETS PACE
⭕ 2.13 Southwell ‘Men are domesticated animals and, treated with firmness, they can be made to do most things.’ So said author Jilly Cooper.
Thus far Mark Johnston’s eponymous filly has been trained to win only three races out of 20, though beaten less than a couple of lengths on half a dozen other occasions.
That includes one of her rare ventures over a mile, for which I would have thought Southwell ideal.
On Jilly Cooper’s first start there today, she has the one stall and her winning claimer Oliver Stammers is doing the steering.
But Love Your Work is a CD winner who has also scored over further and was second over 1m 2f at this class-4 level in October. Well drawn for the job in hand.
Finery could be the key to the race. A class-5 winner who travels strongly, the mare was overpowered here in March by Love Your Work in a fast time, despite being in receipt of 10lb.
Finery has won twice since, which means she’s now right up close in the ratings to Love Your Work, who is the only CD winner in the race and looks ready for a return to form, with P J McDonald booked.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 10.0 Love Your Work
LAST CHANCE SALOON, GUMBALL!
⭕ 2.50 Ludlow A class-2 chase, much loved by Venetia Williams (three wins in a row, 2012-14), but usually going to a young horse; ages 6 and 7 total 8-10 in the decade.
But there is no emerging chase talent this time around; the youngster, seven-year-old front-runner Prince Escalus, has to give weight to all the fancied horses.
His ‘emerging’ came to a dead-end in the Spring after back-to-back wins in small fields; both were class 3 and there’s been no further progress, but he does go well fresh.
All of which still leaves us to make a choice from the 8yo-plus, so can it be Venetia after all?
Desque De L’Isle dismissed a small field for his third consecutive November victory but was beaten into third when 5lb higher in this race last year.
The runner-up that day, Gumball, has been aimed high and should be thereabouts after wind surgery, which could be why he would get a good lead, then swerve the race away or fade at the business end. This is last-chance saloon!
The Widdow Maker seems to want further and it will be hard work for the old fella, Bun Doran who along with Monsieur Lecoq, finished well behind at Newbury in November.
BETDAQ value 3.9 Gumball
A BET BREWING BUT MUST IMPROVE
⭕ 4.15 Newcastle An odds-on shot here but in a ‘handicap’ with wide conditions plus recent penalties, resulting in three of the four being claimed off.
Three are CD winners, with Brewing and Adam Farragher attempting a hat-trick, but only one horse placed behind him at Kempton and here at Newcastle has scored since, and that at class-5 level.
He must improve on this handicap debut but then William Haggas youngsters usually do; he places them extremely well.
Beattie Is Back won here in February but failed to place when dropped a furlong for four consecutive races; his tough rating slipped until he won 7lb lower at Wolverhampton the last day.
That was just a week ago and he will have to carry a 6lb penalty, which seems to be a worry since connections have brought in Zak Wheatley for his 5lb claim.
Emily Post also won last time, seemingly thanks to the application of blinkers and being dropped down to class 5.
Parallel World wins year on year in the December-January period but his Tapeta form at Newcastle is not inspiring (300).
His stable is badly out of form (0-17) and today’s claimer recorded two ‘duck-eggs’ on him in the Spring.
The market will help you on this first start in blinkers, after his SPs since February of 20-1, 66-1 and 33-1. It was certainly clear at the ‘off’ what was going to happen in those three runs!
