🇺🇸 DEL MAR PREVIEWS: Every day this week, Daqman is looking forward to the weekend Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, starting with Friday night (into Saturday) but with the championship races Saturday night (into Sunday morning). Yesterday: City of Troy bids for racing immortality.
BREEDERS’ CUP: GOING ‘FIRM’
🇺🇸 9.45 Del Mar, Friday (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, 5f) It’s the turn of English trained runners to go for a hat-trick, following three in a row for Wesley Ward, including one of his quick starters at Santa Anita (2021) in 57secs.
But back at Santa Anita last year, Big Evs (Michael Appleby 2023) made virtually all off 55.3secs after Charlie Appleby with Mischief Magic (2022) had stopped the home run.
Ideal for the Del Mar track on Friday is Aesterius (Archie Watson), who made virtually all in the Flying Childers at Doncaster in September.
🇺🇸 11.05 Del Mar, Friday (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, 1m) The home side usually wins this but Aidan O’Brien had a strong favourite at Keeneland in 2022, the Cheveley Park runner-up Meditate, and she duly won.
I shall be looking for a high stall for the same stable’s Lake Victoria, not second but winner of the Cheveley Park, as well as the Moyglare and Sweet Solera on different surfaces.
🇺🇸 12.25 Del Mar, Saturday morning (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, 1m) This is more like it! Aidan O’Brien 4, Charlie Appleby 3 since 2013.
Stalls 1, 3, 5 filled the first three places at Del Mar in 2021 with the winner, Modern Games (Appleby), going on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland the following year from gate 4.
New Century (Andrew Balding) has led the market for Friday, after beating Charlie Appleby’s Al Qudra in the Grade-1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine in September, with Dream On third.
O’Brien’s Henri Matisse comfortably beat Hotazhell in the Curragh Futurity before that one won the Beresford Stakes from Sunday’s big winner in France, Tennessee Stud.
WELCOME HOMER
⭕ 2.12 Catterick Homer Stokes can make a bold bid to complete a course, distance and going hat-trick!
The six-year-old only scrambled home by a neck here last time under Joanna Mason but hasn’t been handicapped out of it with a rise of just 2lb which is offset by Joe Leavy taking off 3lb. It won’t be easy but he arrives in great form and just loves the soft ground conditions.
Ironically Joanna Mason could give us most to worry about as she teams up with Cotton Lady who hasn’t managed to follow-up on her debut 33/1 success in 11 subsequent races. However she has plenty of placed form that reads well in the context of this race and handles soft – as she proved two starts ago when third at Carlisle.
Mister Sox was reasonably popular on the Betdaq Betting Exchange morning market and he is another that generally likes it here although his latest effort (5th, beaten 8 lengths) leaves him with something to find on the same ground.
DREAM BEFORE MIDNIGHT
⭕ 5.30 Newcastle Roger Varian’s My Cloud should make it third time lucky in the novice event at 6.30pm but after defeats at 4/9 (both times) won’t be carrying my money at forecast odds of 2/9. You’ve just got to let them win at that price, even with the stable in such terrific form (8 winners from their last 24 runners).
I’m hoping he will be bidding to give the trainer a double as Midnight’s Dream went into my notebook at Kempton last time out and looks a solid bet in this one mile handicap.
Despite finishing fifth, I thought it was his best effort to date as he wasn’t beaten far and the handicapper has been quite generous by dropping him a pound.
He was staying on to good effect and the step up to a mile from seven furlongs looks perfect.
KITAAB TO LAND ‘RESIDENTS ONLY’ RACE
⭕ 7.00 Newcastle This is a race seemingly confined to course regulars only! There are five course and distance winners amongst the nine runners.
They include Kitaab who won under today’s pilot Kaiya Fraser two starts ago and then went on to run a big race at Kempton when third in a better class race where he was given too much to do and did well to finish so close.
He’s up in the weights but most here are looking for some relief from the handicapper and he is napped to resume winning ways.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
