ANOTHER NATIONAL VICCTOR?

📈 FORTUNE COOKIES We set ourselves to devise an early list of Grand National prospects for Aintree, the Welsh National at Chepstow and the other lesser versions requiring stamina ranging between 3m 2f+ and 4m 2f+ right up to the Scottish National at Ayr in the Spring.

Gaboriot was first on the list after his staying-on third in the Grand Sefton over the Grand National fences.

But, though the Newbury Gold Cup on Saturday was called out for quality, I have my eye on the two six-year-olds who finished second and third.

It’s about time Nigel Twiston-Davies had another National sort, and Broadway Boy – five out of six in 2023 – stayed on to divide Kandoo Kid and Vicctorino.

He is a possible entry for the Gold Cup, with the Welsh Grand National next on the cards, four days before his seventh birthday.

Third at Cheltenham in October, Vicctorino was third again, staying stoutly for his seventh place in eight starts over fences, four of them wins, three at Cheltenham.

He’s another who has won on good and soft and he’s another for Venetia Williams, currently striking at 25%, and who a week earlier defeated Grey Dawning and Bravemansgame with the Haydock hero, Royal Pagaille.

Venetia has already won a National with Mon Mome (2009), Twiston-Davies with Earth Summit (1998) and Bindaree (2002).

GETTING CARRIED AWAY

⭕ 3.15 Southwell A competitive finale to today’s jumps card at Southwell where I think Let’s Sail Away has realistic chances of defying top weight for the Tom Lacey yard.

An impressive winner of his point debut at Larkhill, he showed promise over hurdles at Uttoxeter in April, but the two mile trip looks woefully short for him and this step up in distance is a real positive on his handicap debut.

Many of his rivals are starting to look quite exposed with the exception of Well Done Dani who remains progressive and I will include her as a second bet.

She has won here previously over the two mile trip and brings good recent form into the race.

AFTER THE LORD MAYOR’S SHOW

⭕ 5.00 Newcastle I’m slightly wary of joining the party after the Lord Mayor’s Show with HK Fourteen who was bidding for a four-timer last time out but ran well enough at Southwell to suggest he can notch up another win off his unchanged handicap mark.

His winning run started at Bath in October and he then won two races here, over both five and six furlongs. Luke Morris rides for the first time.

To say his rivals are struggling for a win would be an understatement. Chief danger on the Betdaq Betting Exchange is Jackson Street who remains a maiden after 15 starts and is not getting much relief from the handicapper. I’d be concerned that his better form has come over longer trips.

A bigger danger could come from previous course and distance winner Bellagio Man who is expensive to follow but was a fair 20/1 second over course and distance last time out and is now two rungs down the step ladder.

RED ALL ABOUT IT

⭕ 5.30 Newcastle Red Maids only scrambled home by a short head for her first win on the all-weather over course and distance last time out and my instinct was to take her on off a 3lb higher mark.

However the form adds up quite well and she takes a DROP in grade. She’s been fairly highly tried throughout her career – this summer she was contesting handicaps at Newmarket, Newbury and Ascot and will find this class level much more amenable.

Main market rival Holy Fire has gone off the boil since a promising start to her career and last time out winner Lincoln Legacy might be a bigger threat.

It’s difficult to know the strength of her four runner course and distance win last time out but it was considerably better than her previous efforts – possibly sparked by the first time blinkers which are on again here.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
