DAQMAN SEEING DOUBLE AT 14-1: Daqman looked for some rare outsiders on a tricky day yesterday and had two out of two, both placed: Las Verglas Star (2nd 14-1) at Ayr and Lindart (3rd 14-1) at Windsor.

JOHNSTON THE MAN TO FOLLOW: Today Daqman starts to explore the BETDAQ ante-post offers for the Ebor meeting at York, and picks from one race from each of the four meetings in England this afternoon and tonight. He’s looking at a Mark Johnston double.

BIG BETDAQ VALUE IN THE EBOR ANTE-POST

Better be quick, Jack! The first rule of ante-post betting is to find a runner that is priced bigger than it should be. Get an early position and hope to trade on or nearer the day.

It’s difficult to price up a race before the declarations are made, as in the case of the Ebor Handicap, with a card of 76 still staring at you.

But at least we know that Quick Jack, Clever Cookie and Van Percy are all bigger offers on BETDAQ, than in the books of the fixed-odds layers.

Some bookmakers bet 10-1 each of the three but you could get 16.5 Quick Jack, 17.0 Clever Cookie and 18.5 Van Percy when I compared the orange list to the Oddschecker table.

One huge standout was Marzocco, 12-1 with Ladbrokes, but so big (47.0) on BETDAQ that you wonder about his preferred engagement.

Marzocco is a John Gosden three-year-old I have my eye on; a ‘hidden’ horse, probably much better than the bare form, second in the Goodwood Derby trial (Cocked Hat Stakes).

He was then third in the Queens Vase, with the winner, Hartnell, going on to take the Bahrain Trophy. Forget his last run, fifth in the Grand Prix de Paris in a bog.

Marzocco is also a possible for the Great Voltigeur and has the St Leger and the Long Distance Cup at the British Champions Day festival on his pencilled-in agenda.

But I can’t help thinking – checking out his relatives with Grade-1 trophies on their sideboards in the States – that he will form part of the Gosden assault on the USA later on. You read it here first.

FRONT-RUNNING SHOWSTOPPA AT CARLISLE

Looking for an edge today? It’s an edge all right in midweek.. cliff top these days, and more about conserving your wallet unless ‘a nugget’ appears in the sand.

There were two shining gold yesterday, 14-1 second and third, one of them even bigger on BETDAQ. But, like the ante-post price about Marzocco, if they are TOO big, we begin to suspect there’s a problem or a different day in mind.

CARLISLE Those nervous of Showstoppa (3.20), as a firm-ground winner, should check out results for his sire’s progeny: 100% record on heavy; 33% on soft; 20% good to soft. Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain..

Showstoppa beat a winner and a subsequent class-3 scorer at Musselburgh and I can see this Mark Johnston filly taking an unassailable lead.

FFOS LAS Johnny Murtagh, in good form with back-to-back winners at the Galway festival, steals the headlines with his first runner at Ffos Las: Eye Of The Tiger (5.15), a winner after a year off last time he scored.

Eye Of The Tiger hasn’t won on turf since May, 2010, and Curbyourenthusiasm, the ‘moral’ at Salisbury on the soft in the Spring – narrow second, giving weight to the winner – leapfrogged to the front of the BETDAQ market this morning.

LINGFIELD There’s a class-4 here (6.35), aa sprint, so all eyes on Robert Cowell, who returns Arctic Lynx to Polytrack 2lb below his last winning mark.

But the one I like is Al’s Memory: ran second here at this level in July and William Buick has been booked, taking over from a claimer. Prolific last year with seven wins, now 10lb below his highest winning mark.

NOTTINGHAM From Al’s Memory to my memories. The best card of the day is at Colwick Park, which always reminds me of ‘Tennis Shoes’, boss of the Carlton Club there way back when this was the best town in England before it was ruined by the council and the Playhouse Theatre was snubbed by the Arts Council for being far too good and avant garde.

Yes, always immaculately dressed, yet always wore tennis shoes (ready to do a runner?). Tennis Shoes knew everyone who was anyone in the ring, and he’d need to on a day like today, when the three best races are sprints.

I’ll stick to distance, with the 1m 6f of the 6.55 handicap giving us a level playing-field. Three-year-olds do well in this and Late Shipment is by a soft-ground sire.
