5-1 WINNER FOR ANOTHER DAY’S PROFIT: Daqman finished in front again yesterday, thanks to Irene Kennet (WON 5-1), following his 10-1 jackpot hit on Sunday and his 33 points from three winners on Friday.
NAP GOES ON TUDHOPE ‘HOLIDAY’: Daqman’s nap goes on Danny Tudhope, who rides Royal Holiday and Helmsley Flyer at Southwell before his Meydan trip to partner Penitent at the World Cup meeting.
I fancy Danny Tudhope to get a Flyer for Dubai today. Helmsley Flyer at Southwell will be his last ride in England before he jets off to Dubai.
Danny is riding 7-1 second-favourite Penitent for David O’Meara in the Godolphin Mile at Meydan’s World Cup meeting.
The ride may cost him a leg: the first leg of the Spring Double, in which he was to have partnered Hit The Jackpot. With the Lincoln postponed until Saturday, he has had to relinquish the ‘Jackpot’ ride to partner Penitent on the same day.
Tudhope was Penitent’s partner when they won the Doncaster Mile at the Lincoln meeting last year in what was to be a memorable season for new trainer O’Meara. The pair went on to grab the Sandown Mile and another Group 2 at Newmarket in September.
Helmsley Flyer (3.00) is the only O’Meara-Tudhope runner today, surprisingly easy to back at 6.2 on BETDAQ this morning, with all the money for India’s Song, showing just better than evens.
At those offers, I could back Helmsley Flyer and save on India’s Song, in a race where potential improvement and riding tactics make the form hard to assess, and there isn’t much form to go on anyway.
Tudhope also rides Royal Holiday (2.30), back to his winning trip at Southwell (three times) after returning to form last time out over further: I backed him at 3.15 with the only other one supported, the 12-starts maiden Thereabouts.
Thereabouts is being tipped up for this on the strength of his running second to the smart Frontier Fighter but he was wearing visors for the first time that day.
They didn’t help much, nor did first-time blinkers last August, and what little effect there was could wear off quickly. The third horse in the market, Bold Marc, is 11 years old and is only a plater these days.
David Simcock, who trains India’s Song in that Helmsley Flyer race, ridden last time out by Jamie Spencer, prefers to book ‘Spenny’ for one ride at Lingfield.
Gabrial The Duke (2.20) seems to have only Day In Day Out to fear, since Andrew Balding’s runners usually need a run and his Brick Rising was easy to back this morning, out to 6.4 on BETDAQ.
Gary Moore fans will note that he has two runners ridden by Ryan at Lingfield – Buy Art (3.50) and Dutch Old Master (4.20) – and Via Sundown (2.10) just down the road at Fontwell, piloted by Jamie.
Buy Art hardly broke sweat to score in first-time cheekpieces on the course on Sunday and should defy a 6lb penalty before the handicapper tightens his grip.
Tony McCoy is there for one mount, Chestnut Ben (4.40), determined to outthink the Gary Brown eight-year-old who reckoned he’d done enough over CD on the last day.
Chestnut Ben faltered on the hill after leading on and off for most of the race. It will be interesting to see how McCoy handles him.
To be fair, Ben was giving nearly two stone to the winner that day and, despite his top weight here, finds only Tchang Goon running loose this time.
Tchang Goon has had similar weight concessions, plus blinkers, the last twice and has only managed to plod along into his usual third place each time. Tching, tching for Chestnut Ben!
