CLASH OF THREE BECHER WINNERS
They’re building the big fences this week. Aintree’s formidable Grand National obstacles could tell us on Saturday which horses can take the big leap to fame this season.
BECHER CHASE Earth Summit (Nigel Twiston-Davies), Amberleigh House (Ginger McCain), Silver Birch (Paul Nicholls), Black Apalachi (the late Dessie Hughes) and, most recently, Blaklion (Twiston-Davies again) took off from these big fences to be winners or placed in the Grand National.
The last three Becher winners may be back again, all old enough, and wise enough now, to figure in the real thing next April.
Blaklion, who won this last year off 153, was brought down at the first fence when well fancied for this year’s National but had been fourth in 2017. He has 158 on Saturday.
Vieux Lion Rouge was the 2016 Becher winner from Highland Lodge (who had won the year before) and The Last Samuri, who has a weights pull on Saturday.
My horses to follow include Rock The Kasbah, impressive at Cheltenham in November, who would be having his first taste of the Aintree obstacles.
THE GRAND SEFTON is run over only 2m 5f but that’s still a tough test and it has produced winning stayers over lesser obstacles on the flat tracks.
I see lurking among the bottom weights, Federici, on whom Donald McCain is noticeably keen in interviews this year.
He jumped the fences, fourth, in the Becher won by Blaklion but 2m 5f is his last winning trip, so looks well suited to the Grand Sefton off 10st 5lb.
BEN WORTH WAITING FOR AT SOUTHWELL
2.40 Fakenham There are whole host of short priced favourites on today’s card but it can be a quirky venue that throws up a few shocks.
This handicap chase looks one of the more competitive races and I thought that Show’s Over looks opposable under his 7lb penalty for his win last week at Sedgefield where he landed the odds but made quite hard work of doing so and might well be vulnerable with this extra weight.
Ordinarily you’d think the runner-up that day, Yourholidayisover, would have a chance of reversing the form on 8lb better terms (for 3 1/4 lengths) especially after being hampered in the run but the 11-year-old is an infrequent winner and seldom finds much at the business end of his races.
A better alternative to both might be Wise Cracker who is starting to show some form. He was quite disappointing before his latest two efforts at Wincanton and Hereford where he finished second on both occasions and should handle the cut in the ground too as he was a good third at Doncaster over hurdles when it was testing.
As ever, the (BETDAQ) prices dictate and at 4.3 at the time of writing Wisecracker appeals more over the favourite.
2.50 Lingfield This Ladbrokes-sponsored novice event looks competitive with the well-bred Paul Cole tried debutant Mercenary Rose being the potential spanner in the work to all – and the top weight Sandridge Lad might be vulnerable under his double penalty.
He’s a consistent sort but only scraped home by a neck at Southwell last time and the progressive horses should be able to take advantage of their weight pull.
Society Star is preferred. She has run two sound races at Wolverhampton and it looks like there’s further improvement to come.
Madame Vitesse might need further, judged by her course and distance fourth last time out.
3.30 Southwell It’s very hard to get away from Ben Buie here who is a better price than I was expecting for a horse that finished runner-up at Ascot on debut.
There was plenty to like about his debut run behind Emitom, he was nibbled at in the market and was staying on nicely in the closing stages. The winner gave the form a nice boost when winning by five lengths at Ffos Las on his subsequent hurdling debut.
The ground is different – but going on pedigree it should suit him even better. Nap.
