GOSHEN OVER FENCES: Chapter 2
⭕ 1.15 Lingfield The most interesting race of the day comes early at Lingfield with the next chapter of ‘Goshen Over Fences’. A full 18lb clear of both his rivals he was trading around even money on Betdaq Betting Exchange which speaks volumes in itself as similar rated horses would be long odds-on in this scenario.
But we are dealing with the enigmatic Goshen who infamously capsized at the last when holding a 10 length lead in the Triumph Hurdle of 2020 and since then has shown only sporadic glimpses of his undoubted former talent.
The big question remains can he do it over fences? You’d probably say a big no on the evidence of his sole start over fences at Ascot where he seemed to hate the experience and ended up being beaten 65 lengths and last of three finishers.
He has since redeemed himself with a win back over hurdles at Ascot and a highly creditable run when runner-up to Paisley Park in the Long Walk at Ascot.
Cheekpieces are on for the first time today and you can take the view that it might be overly harsh to judge his chasing prowess on the back of one solitary start.
It falls into the no bet category for me today. I’d be taking evens on a coin flip which in the long runs gives me no profit. Personally I hope he wins but I don’t want to oppose him purely on the strength of one poor performance with no firm views on either of his opponents.

FINDING GOLD AT SOUTHWELL
⭕ 5.30 Southwell This looks far better than the official class 5.
Roaring Legend was nibbled at on debut when runner-up to Intricacy in a (on paper at least) better quality class 4 and the form of that was given a boost when the third placed Imperial Ace came out to win next time out.
With normal improvement Roaring Legend should be able to make the most of the weight he receives from the penalised Imperial Ace (won nicely enough at Newcastle last time out) and Regal Empire who sprang a 22/1 surprise when winning over course and distance last time out on the back of not showing much on debut.
⭕ 7.00 Southwell Skyblue Expert looks a little short in the market for me here. He’s been slowly dropping in the handicap but I can’t be backing the likely favourite on the back of his recent efforts.
Aurophobia (fear of gold – thank you Encyclopedia Google) looks a solid alternative after a better run when just denied at Lingfield last time out.
⭕ 8.30 Southwell Dubai Jeanius improved for the step up in distance to win here 11 days ago and a further extension in trip might help negate the 4lb rise in the weights. Trainer Michael Herrington has had two winners from his last 10 runners.
