GREY SKIES ARE SKELTONS GOLD

⭕ 3.05 Haydock, Saturday (£116k Lancashire Chase, 3m 1f+) GOING: GOOD, likely to be softened by forecast rain. This features the return of Gold Cup hope Grey Dawning for the Skeltons.

169 Ahoy Senor (Lucinda Russell): Won small-field novice chases at Newbury, Wetherby, Aintree at age seven, but best form in nine starts since when runner-up in the Aintree Bowl last Spring.

165 Bravemansgame (Paul Nicholls): Four novice chases in a row three years ago and back-to-back wins in the Charlie Hall Chase and the King George one year later.

Second at Cheltenham, third at Punchestown, in Gold Cups (Spring 2023) and consecutive seconds in the Charlie Hall, Lancashire Chase and the King George later in the year of 2023.

165 Royal Pagaille (Venetia Williams): Won this race last year ,just as he’d won the Peter Marsh first time out at Haydock in January, 2022. King George runner-up in-between.

163 Hewick (John Joseph Hanlon): Winner of the 2023 King George, with Bravemansgame (left in lead but hampered two out a long way off his best) in second, The Real Whacker 4th.

159 Capodanno (Willie Mullins) Champion novice chaser at the 2022 Punchestown Festival; Cotswold Chase winner at Cheltenham in January and fourth in the Ryanair at the festival.

159 The Real Whacker (Patrick Neville): Cheltenham hat-trick in the winter of 2023, culminating in the Brown Advisory. Led from the 4th, outgalloping Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall in early November.

157 Grey Dawning (Dan Skelton) In the first three 13 consecutive races, still standing. Winner of the Graduation Chase at this meeting last year; Turners winner at the Cheltenham Festival in March from Ginnys Destiny. Not raced since third at Aintree.

153 Limerick Lace (Gavin Cromwell) Five chase wins, including the Mares at the Cheltenham festival. Last ran (badly hampered) in the Aintree Grand National.

151 Minella Drama (Donald McCain) Does well on the Mildmay course at Aintree; third in the Melling Chase and second in the Old Roan 2023 but won the Old Roan renewal last month.

150 Gold Tweet (Gaby Leenders) Stable won the weekend cross-country at Cheltenham with Sweet David.

Gold Tweet took the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham and Grade 2 chase at Auteuil 2023 but well behind chasing hat-trick scorer Il Est Francais (heavy) in September.

PROFESSOR IS NOT MY MATE

⭕ 3.25 Lingfield A trappy finale but a race where I want to take on the prominently Betdaq Betting Exchange priced Professor Tickle.

The ‘prof’ has bits and pieces of form that give him a chance but the majority of his better form has come over six furlongs and I’m far from convinced this seven suits him.

He only beat one home when last tried over this trip on the all-weather and is up a grade from his latest run which came just last week when third over six furlongs.

I prefer the chances of My Mate Mike who has the polar opposite credentials. He is better over seven furlongs and won back to back races over this trip at Wolverhampton and here at Lingfield before being surprisingly dropped back in trip at Wolverhampton and failing to fire.

I think he is worth another spin over this optimum distance and his trainer Dean Ivory has his string in pretty good form with recent winners including a 33/1 shot at Chelmsford.

CROUCH END

⭕ 5.30 Southwell Plenty of eyes here on Hector Crouch who bids for a fifth consecutive winner after successes earlier this week (6/1 dead-heat, 8/1, 11/4 and 5/2).

Crouch rides Kinetic who is now looking in the grip of the handicapper after an easy course win three starts ago.

Andrew Balding’s Hebridean Nomad is the likely market leader and the betting patterns will be of interest given he has been off the course for 419 days.

Two against the field for me are Kempton winner Timetobenice who looked to be coming back to form last time out, running well despite a game of dodgem cars in the final furlong.

Hat-trick seeking Molinari is heading back up the weights but is still 10lb lower than his career high so might not be done quite yet and is a sporting priced nap.

HOLD THE APPLAUSE

⭕ 6.30 Southwell Rosa Applause was hovering around evens on the overnight Betdaq market and whilst her chance is pretty obvious I’m not sure I’d want to be taking such short odds.

The form of the Crisford’s stable worries me, 0-16 over the last fortnight, and I’m not sure that Rosa Applause has really built on her early promise which saw her win back to back races at Wolverhampton and Lingfield on just her second and third career starts.

Her recent form on both turf and AW gives her a clear form chance but she’s beginning to find one or two too good suggesting that she might need a few pounds help from the handicapper.

It’s not a deep race but My Awele looks a sensible alternative. She goes well here (form 181), the middle run in that sequence looks nothing more than a bad day at the office and she fairly scooted clear to win last time over five furlongs, going away in the closing stages, and is back up in trip again.
