PLAYER LANDS BIG CUP GAMBLE: After losing bankers spoilt the profits, Daqman yesterday responded with two quick hits. A return from Gores Island (WON at 3-1), and then his Kilmany Cup headlined bet, Royal Player (WON 10-11), landed a gamble in tremendous style.

IRISH EYES ON DOUBLE WHAMMYS: Daqman today dares a double of Double Whammys, in which he lays the favourites and bets against them. These bets – and his nap– depend on winners at the two English jumps meetings for Irish stables.

AT THE DOUBLE AGAIN WITH TONY MARTIN

BANGOR: Class 4 at best they may be, but Bangor has a full set of intriguing contests today, on soft but drying ground, if the promised sunshine has materialised. Man in the spotlight is Tony Martin, looking for a third double in a racing week.

Martin, who scored twice at Fairyhouse on New Year’s Day, is keeping faith with Denis O’Regan for two mounts here, after Denis’s fabulous ride on the Co Meath stable’s Living Next Door to land the Grade-B PP Chase over Christmas.

O’Regan completed another Martin double when they joined forces at Leopardstown that day and one more winner here would bring the stable’s total to six in seven days’ racing.

The County Meath outfit also had Delvin Road (1.40) and Heathfield (2.40) entered for Ludlow tomorrow but has switched them to this Bangor venue.

Heathfield takes on Bourne, who steps up in trip to 3m here after a narrow defeat three days ago, making it 20 losing races in a row. He’s never before coped with such a quick return, and his best run at 24 furlongs or more is defeat by 16 lengths.

Heathfield, too, is up in trip. But his Uttoxeter win on heavy suggests he’ll get it all right and he’s had 52 days’ holiday to resolve any bounce factor.

Saint John Henry is a quirky individual and Petrovic had been kept to a sound surface until pulled up on the soft last time, so seems to need much better ground.

That also applies to Mighty Man’s sister, Mighty Minnie. But she is unexposed and the longer trip tackled today could make a deal of difference.

The obvious dangers to Delvin Road in the maiden earlier (1.40) are Relic Rock and Weststreet. Both were beaten on their hurdles debuts. Relic Rock has the better bumper form – boosted by Fletchers Flyer – but is up in trip and the Westerner, Weststreet, is the one with stamina in his pedigree. He was beaten at Market Rasen but the second and fifth have won since.

What I like about Delvin Road is that he travelled and hurdled so well on his Down Royal introduction, and the first three came 20 lengths clear of a solid favourite.

IZZINI LOOKS ANOTHER FOR IRISH RAIDERS

SEDGEFIELD: System doing well; send more money! Just as we started looking at stables doubly declared in a race, they’re all at it, at Sedgefield at least.

Philip Kirby has two in the first (1.00); Stuart Crawford and Kim Bailey two each in the second (1.30); Tim Easterby two in the handicap hurdle (2.30); and Kirby again saddles two in the concluding bumper (3.30).

Yorkshire-trainer Easterby has been out of form for some time, and the needle seems to have stuck with Dark Dune (2.30), having his fourth consecutive appearance on 125, albeit back to hurdles, the discipline which won him a race over CD in March.

But his 7lb claimer takes his weight down to just 3lb higher than that March victory, which leaves nothing much to choose between him and stablemate Getabuzz.

Getabuzz, who has a senior jockey on board, was a winner here on the same card that day in March, his second Sedgefield success –both over further – and is now down to within a pound of that. But he’s never been better than 10 lengths off the winner at a trip short of his winning form at 19 and 20 furlongs.

Izzini has won twice over today’s CD – in a bumper and a hurdle – and is well regarded by Irish trainer Crawford, who is 8-29 at Sedgefield in the last five seasons.

Ignore her first run back, and one bad jump cost her involvement in the finish at Catterick on the last day. Andrew Lynch is over here for three Crawford rides today but, of them all, only Izzini is his regular partner, significantly making her handicap debut.

Un Guet Apens is a better chaser than hurdler. Just Cameron’s stable is out of form (22 losers since Boxing Day) and Lucky Landing’s success came on a sound surface.
