⭕ 3.10 Pontefract (Pipalong Stakes) This Listed event for fillies and mares brightens up what is otherwise a fairly moderate Tuesday.
It’s no surprise to see Doha at the front of the betting on Betdaq Betting Exchange. She is progressive and comes into this on the back of her win at Royal Ascot where she won the class 2 Kensington Palace Stakes by a head.
Her chance is obvious but on form and value grounds she is worth opposing. This represents a step up in class and she still has 7lb to find with Astral Beau and Caernarfon who are both rated 102.
Of course it’s entirely possible she’ll continue to improve and negate the class issue but the point is you are paying a price that already factors that in – so very little margin for error.
I like Astral Beau, even though her current form figures of 48-255 don’t leap off the page.
Her recent fifth came in the Group 2 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom where she was only beaten two lengths and the more rain the better for her.
Daqman’s check of the weather forecast for Pontefract today suggests the track are in for some thundery showers.
VROOM SERVICE
⭕ 3.40 Pontefract A class 2 handicap which is by some margin the second best race of the day.
Again, with one eye on the weather forecast, I want to keep on the right side of Room Service who won a £300,000 sales race at Doncaster last September.
He hasn’t performed badly in two races at Group/Listed level this season and with the yard in such good form plus getting 2lb relief from the handicapper – he could find this a lot easier challenge than of late.
Matters Most was down the field in the Palace Of Holyrood House Stakes at Royal Ascot on his latest start and has disappointed on testing ground previously – something to note if the heavens were to open.
A bigger danger may come from the Fahey trained filly Flaccianello who ran a cracker at York last time out.

I’m struggling to see why Bateman is quite so short for this mile handicap?
His form has been fairly modest to date and will need to improve quite significantly on his handicap debut.
He’s also had different trainers for each of his three starts to date which must be some kind of a record?
