JUMPS LOST TODAY: BLEAK TOMORROW: Leicester and Hereford abandoned so just Wolverhampton AW left today and a morning inspection at Taunton tomorrow if we are to resume over jumps. The forecast is sleet!
CHELTENHAM ACCEPTORS: With Gold Cup and Champion Chase acceptors due today, Daqman looks at Cheltenham tomorrow.
HAYLEY LOOKS BIG VALUE
Sprint hint. When faced with a nine-race card, the races to be avoided are sprints and Classified stakes.
By coincidence, they are combined as the 6.00 and 6.30 divisions of a 6f class–6 Classified here at Wolverhampton tonight.
That still leaves a 6f handicap at 7.00 but it is the outstanding race of the night, class wise (Level 4? Aren’t we spoiled!).
⭕ 4.30 Wolverhampton Adjusting my goggles and diving into the murky waters of a fillies handicap (7f), I am stunned to find that somewhere up above is the red glow of sunset but with eight races left!
Kingmont started with her maiden win at Kempton last Spring and, from a summer break, was not disgraced in a class 2 at Lingfield, after a tricky passage through the field before fading.
Ellexis was a CD winner at Wolver last January but, after a break, was consecutively last or last but one (10/10, 10/11 and 11/12) at big prices; compare with 7-4 and 11-5 when the mare won, so keep the market up and see what happens to her morning offers of 10.0 on Betdaq Betting Exchange.
Hayley Turner is 42142 on her sole ride of the day, Sid’s Annie, and Mark Usher is one of her three winningmost trainers. Sids Annie closed quickly from 9.0 to 6.0 on BETDAQ this morning.
The one she has to beat is Caraway, CD winner who has climbed 15lb since September but with form figures 112123 suggesting that the last 7lb of her rise in the ratings has taken its toll.
OWEN’S PROUD RECORD
⭕ 5.00 Wolverhampton Forever Proud was 121 over Christmas for rising star trainer James Owen, the two successes under Hector Crouch. Can they keep the sequence going?
It would bring Owen’s January total to 4-8 in five racing days, after High Court Judge (WON 2-1) here at Wolver yesterday, also ridden by Crouch.
Strictly, at the weights, Boujee Gold should confirm the form when he pipped Forever Proud threeparts of a length, robbing him in the middle leg here of what would have been a hat-trick.
But Boujee Gold has never before put two runs together; in each case success was an isolated affair.
And it was a unique event when Ravenglass scored here in October, his sole strike on AW (1-12) attributable to first-time blinkers.
Northern Cracksman was repeatedly denied a run at Southwell but, hang on, didn’t he run two seconds back to back in the Spring and isn’t he now 0-13, changing trainer, swapping blinkers for visor and now back to cheekpieces.
FLEET COULD SAIL IN
⭕ 5.30 Wolverhampton Your problem here in this 1m+ novice chase is choosing between a first-timer of Charlie Appleby’s – Treasure Fleet – and Andrew Balding’s Chemical.
Chemical, leading until a furlong out at York (class 2 soft), was gelded afterwards.
The morning BETDAQ market claims Treasure Fleet is a good thing at 1.67 but that leaves Chemical tempting at 4.2.
⭕ 7.00 Wolverhampton Here’s that 6f class-4, with Tiger Crusade down from a class-2 third at Kempton and dropped nearly a stone on his last AW success.
The mare Just A Spark (BETDAQ 10.5) also plummets from that level and, claimed off, is back to the kind of weight that landed her a hat-trick a year or so ago.
Twice a winner after his holidays, Lir Speciale (8.0 offers this morning) looks plotted for the race from a 122-day break, visored first time and dropped 11lb since the Spring.
BUNGLE BAY THE BEST
⭕ 8.00 Wolverhampton Bungle Bay 5, Pessoa 4. The local heroes clash, with nine Wolverhampton strikes between them.
Heavenly Fire (short of room) was third here on Boxing Day, with the favourite, Pessoa (4th), a big punt but (hung left) failing to give a lump of weight.
Bungle Bay was back to form the last day and is taken to beat the four-year-old as best of the top-weights.
