CRISFORD PLOTS A BREEDERS CUP

Wait for it! Simon Crisford, striking at around 30% overall, including two AW scorers, hasn’t had a Flat turf runner out of the frame in the last fortnight with a sequence of 13213.

A hat-trick bid by his two-year-old Aldana has been on hold since October 11, when she completed back-to-back AW wins, and he has quite a decision to make for Friday.

Should she take on older horses – receiving up to 24lb – in a conditions race at Newmarket (at 1.05) or wait 35 minutes for the (Listed) Bosra Sham Fillies stakes?

Crisford is hoping the ground stays soft for Mannaal in another end-of-season Listed (2.35 Newmarket Saturday).

Mannaal finished off a sizeable field at Nottingham a couple of weeks back, despite running green in the closing stages. As a Dubawi she could shoot forward now. A fabulous finish to the season if a yard like Crisford’s can bag black type for two fillies at one meeting, a double which would land him a personal breeders’ cup of champagne from connections!

The November Handicap at Naas on Saturday and the English version at Doncaster on Saturday week brings down the curtain on the Flat.

I’ll be looking for a low draw at Naas (five of the last seven winners from stalls 1 to 5) and a final fling by John Gosden at Doncaster.

Meanwhile this week’s spotlight is on the Breeders Cup itself at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Watch this space!

LOOKING FOR DREAM START AT CATTERICK

12.25 Catterick The opener looks a match between Leodis Dream and Just Be Friendly who is stepping back in trip.

Leodis Dream showed plenty of pace on debut to finish a three quarters of a length second to The Cotswold Wasp and a repeat of that effort, combined with likely improvement, should see him go very close here. He was four lengths clear of the third placed Summer Blossom who is very much a ‘yardstick horse’ with several placed efforts, so the form of the race looks at least average if not better.

The decision to drop Just Be Friendly to five furlongs looks sensible but it’s slightly alarming that in three starts she has raced over 7f, 7f, 6f and never with give in the ground. She’s another with pace so it could be a real burn up over this fast circuit.

Orange Blossom is better than her form figures suggest. She contested the Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar last time out and although 11th was only beaten seven lengths and this is obviously far easier but again she is encountering the softer ground for the first time.

1.25 Catterick The rest of the North Yorkshire card looks very tricky but with just the six runners in this mile and a half handicap – at least it looks manageable to sort out.

Mixboy won this well 12 months ago but he races off a 9lb higher mark today and it’s not as soft as it was last year. He comes into this on the back of a win over hurdles at Sedgefield but his run on the flat prior to that was disappointing, suggesting he might be a little high in the weights.

Current BETDAQ favourite Illustrissime popped up at 25/1 to win narrowly over course and distance last time out but again the ground was softer and he is far from reliable to support to follow up off a 4lb higher mark.

The Tim Easterby trained Dance King looks the most interesting runner. He’s an eight time career winner who should find life in this company a lot easier after some reasonable efforts at Pontefract and York when fourth on both occasions.

It took him a while to get going over 1m 2f at Pontefract and this looks much more his trip. Easterby had two winners yesterday.

7.15 Wolverhampton Coastline made a very pleasing debut over this trip at Newcastle suggesting this Ladbrokes Bet 5 Get 20 Fillies’ Novice Stakes should be within her grasp.

She is preferred to the Godolphin runner City Of Love who was slowly away on debut at Kempton and a couple of interesting debutants.
