RACE THAT THROWS UP CHAMPIONS
⭕ 3.00 tomorrow (Great Voltigeur) Milan (2001), Rule Of Law (2004) and Logician (2019) all went on to win the Doncaster St Leger after taking this trial.
But the Voltigeur has recently produced even better middle-distance animals in two King George winners: Postponed (2014) and Pyledriver (2020) went on to greater things.
The Fortune Cookie supreme in terms of immediate success was Cracksman (2017 Voltigeur), who would go on to win the Prix Niel and Champion Stakes for a treble that season, and the Ganay, Coronation Cup and Champion Stakes the following year.
But Postponed (2014), who won the Voltigeur on firm ground, would score again at York in similar conditions in the Juddmonte International of 2016, after 2015 had seen his finest hour, as winner of the King George on soft, launching a winning streak of six successive victories.
Pyledriver (2020) has since scored once a year in the summer months of June and July with the Coronation Cup at Epsom (2021), King George of 2022 and this year, the Hardwicke Stakes, also at Ascot. Tomorrow’s profiles:
110 GREGORY (John and Thady Gosden) Improved every race in a hat-trick, which has included the Cocked Hat derby trial at Goodwood and the Queens’ Vase at Royal Ascot. St Leger the immediate target, the Gold Cup next year beckoning.
110 CONTINUOUS (Aidan O’Brien) Unable to continue his 2022 unbeaten form, culminating in a Group 3 (very soft), third in the Dante at York and second in the ‘Ascot Derby’ King Edward V11 Stakes. Faded (8th of 11) in the French Derby.
109 CASTLE WAY (Charlie Appleby) Improved out of handicaps to win a Listed at Newmarket and the Bahrain Trophy there on the July Course.
106 ARTISTIC STAR (Ralph Beckett) Seventh in the Epsom Derby and two-and-a-half lengths behind Continuous when third in the King Edward V11.
104 CANBERRA LEGEND (James Ferguson) Listed winner and Group-3 placed at Goodwood.
NOT TOO ENTHUSED
⭕ 4.30 Newton Abbot today I’m not sure there’s been a poorer days racing for a long time? Even allowing for the events on the Knavesmire this week the Tuesday fare of Newton Abbot, Worcester and Roscommon struggles to capture the imagination – particularly given two of those cards are in the evening. It’s almost as if the BHA have forgotten to schedule another afternoon card – surely not!
Valentino Dancer will be popular with the money buyers in the opener at Newton Abbot to continue the good recent form of Fergal O’Brien. His runners in the past fortnight have finished 51332211 – the latest winner Police Academy doing me a favour when winning the last at Bangor last night.
Valentino Dancer should prove hard to beat after a pleasing enough chasing debut and realistically only looks to have Stepney Causeway to beat here but he looks a little short for me on Betdaq Betting Exchange and, as always, price has to dictate for long term success. Sometimes you just need to sit back and ‘let them win’ when you don’t get your price.
I thought Enthused looked a little short. There’s no doubting his consistency but he’s heading up in the weights for NOT winning and has been a beaten favourite in each of his last three races.
Clearance looks a realistic alternative at a course he loves. The three time course and distance winner is up 3lb for his success here last month but seemed to have a bit up his sleeve so a follow-up is on the cards.
CAPTAIN IS THE PICK
⭕ 6.30 Worcester A bumper in the middle of the card – I said it was a strange days racing!
That man Fergal O’Brien features prominently again as he runs Tribal Glory who went close on debut here last month but he has a tough rival here in Captain’s Pick whose Kilbeggan form looks solid. He finished second to Minella Mate on his second start and the winner followed up in a flat race at Galway at 66/1.
That form just looks a little more solid than that of Tribal Glory.
CARRY ON KARA
⭕ 8.00 Worcester The key race here might be the Uttoxeter one where Hungry Hill and Broomfield Cave clashed last time out. Broomfield Cave was coming to challenge Hungry Hill before taking a heavy fall at the last leaving Hungry Hill clear to go on and win. However both of them ran in snatches that day and they might have a tough one to beat in the shape of Karavomylos.
The Bowen’s runner was a winner at Uttoxeter two starts ago and didn’t shape badly over course and distance here last time out. The first time cheekpieces are fitted tonight and he looks the percentage call.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
