NOW IT’S THREE NAPS UP OUT OF FOUR: Uxizandre (WON 11-10) was picked up off the floor by Tony McCoy after blundering two out at Plumpton yesterday to land Daqman’s third winning nap from the last four. It followed Duroble Man (WON 2-1) and Perfect Heart (WON 10-3).

FOUR DAYS PROFIT OUT OF FIVE: Among three winners on the day, he followed a Sunday treble with a double, The Alamo (WON 2-1) and Uxizandre, for an overall Monday profit of 48 points, his fourth winning day out of five.

Exeter novice chases are a goldmine for winners. The first three in the beginners’ chase (2.40) last year were all involved in hat-trick sequences hingeing on this event and the only other horse to finish had completed a treble over hurdles.

But this year it looks more like an old-crocks race, with only one of the three runners, Kentford Grey Lady, having reached a place this year.

After winning Saturday’s novice chase at Cheltenham with Dark Lover and the beginners at Kempton on Sunday with Dodging Bullets, Paul Nicholls resurrects Sonofvic, who will have been called sonofsomethingelse by Ditcheat fans before now.

Sonofvic is bred along the stoutest National Hunt lines for steeplechasing, as an Old Vic out of a Supreme Leader mare. If only he’d remember to jump the fences.

You can hardly blame him for forced errors when he ran up to World Hurdle second Grands Crus but that was nearly two years ago. He made mistakes again over fences and hurdles and today’s race is in the nature of a comeback after more than 18 months off.

But, though Kentford Grey Lady was rated just a pound higher (141-140) than Sonofvic over hurdles, the mare’s allowance gives her a 7lb pull on Sonofvic today.

We’re also on the look-out for young hurdlers and the Greystone (3.10) has produced some decent animals in the past, including Graded-level Boychuk for Philip Hobbs, who has saddled the winner four times in the decade: 1121021

Rain will improve the chances of his Horizontal Speed, but the same applies to Paul Nicholls’ Brinestone and the hat-trick seeker, Minella Friend, all winners on heavy ground.

Ullswater (8.8 this morning) looks well placed to win the Exeter Hurdle (4.10), never out of the frame since he went handicapping in April and getting more than a stone from top-of-the-ground lover, Surf And Turf.

Until otherwise revealed, I shall believe that The Potting Shed (4.40) was allowed an unassailable lead at Worcester in a conditionals’ race (results of these events are always suspect) and that Milarrow and O’Callaghan Strand are the solid handicappers.

At Newmarket-by-the-sea, Sir Robert Cheval (1.50 Yarmouth) was heavily punted to go five points clear in the market this morning in a race which has thrown up pattern performers. Said to be a class act on a day of autumn dross.
