‘SEE HOW THEY’VE WON’ STABLES: Today and tomorrow, Daqman looks at trainers’ records so far. Which Flat stable is ahead of the game this year? Which ones to follow for the rest of the season?

BY GUM! IT’S ALL RIGHT FOR SOME

It’s a good year for Yorkshire. Richard Fahey and Mark Johnston, who have put Malton and Middleham back on the racing map, have earnings which would surpass their entire year in 2016.

Fahey is just £150,000 short of his last year’s total of £3,203,000, nothing a couple or three decent handicaps can’t sort, but his steady march of everyday winners are the staple for breaking that total in the last 10 weeks. He is 50 short of last year’s but his strike rate of 11-12% is on par.

Johnston (a 17% striker), fifth in the table to Fahey’s third – they filled identical positions overall in 2016 – has already overtaken last year’s total earnings with more than £2,700,000.

He is only a dozen or so short of his entire 2016 winners total with 30% of the season remaining, so seems sure to crack that one.

David O’Meara and Kevin Ryan are behind schedule and followers will reckon on the big catch-up in the remaining 10 weeks, with Highland Acclaim (WON 11-2) a warning shot from O’Meara yesterday. He had warned of a slow start and Ryan was hit by a virus.

Tim Easterby fans are already laughing all the way to Sutton Bank! Tim made £773,000 from 75 winners last year but has soared to £945,000 from 63 in 2017. Clearly has better quality animals in better quality races.

The Kings Of Consistency with 20% or better strike rates in BOTH seasons, as always, include Sir Michael Stoute (22% now, same as last year), John Gosden (on 21% compared to 23% total in 2016).

Gosden and Stoute have the Flat turf season’s top money earners in Enable (£1,368,000) and Ulysses (£1,215,000), both stalwarts of my Fortune Cookies list.

But ahead of the percentages with around a quarter of their horses hitting the mark are William Haggas on 26% (23% for the whole of last year), Charlie Appleby 25% (21%) and Saeed Bin Suroor 25% (20%).

Overall it seems that some of the top 20 trainers are bagging a bigger haul of winners and of the prizemoney.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED AT CATTERICK

2.50 Catterick Plenty of Catterick regulars running here but no recent winners so something has to give. Question Of Faith looks the answer to this long distance handicap.

The Martin Todhunter trained mare has stamina in abundance as she proved when winning in soft ground over hurdles at Ayr and also put in a good run on the flat last time out, also at Ayr, when a head second to Chebsey Beau over a similar trip as to today.

That was on good ground too so it’s reasonable to expect another big run today on conditions that were virtually identical to last time out and hopefully Paul Hanagan can steer her to success.

Top weight Bulas Belle needs more respite from the handicapper and softer ground in my opinion. She was beaten 27 lengths at Beverley last time out on good ground over two miles and looks far too short in this market.

NUTS TO IGNORE MONKEY

4.10 Lingfield A busy day on the turf course at Lingfield and the claimer presents a good opportunity for Chunkyfunkymonkey.

Comfortably rated the best in the race, Chunkyfunkymonkey is a dual Yarmouth winner this season and was a very creditable close up third last time to the odds on Entangling, also at Lingfield.

He bucks the trend for a claimer, usually it’s horses on a downwards form spiral but I don’t think that’s the case here and he rates a good bet at around 4.5 on BETDAQ.

DELEYLA THE KEMPTON VALUE

6.55 Kempton I’m not giving up on the Roger Varian trained Deleyla. She ran with promise when third at Goodwood on debut and followed that up with finishing sixth at Newbury when the soft ground went against her.

She looks the value here against debutant Diagnostic and current favourite Euqranian who is looking a little exposed.
