3-1 DAQMAN NAP MAKES HIM THREE OUT OF SIX STILL STANDING: Daqman hit a cracking third winning nap of the new year with Edmund Kean (WON 3-1) yesterday, following 9-2 and 11-8 scorers inside a week to give him best-bet form figures in 2014 of 14U1241. The three winners from six to have completed have landed an overall profit of 31.30:
WON 11-8 DOUBLE ROSS Jan 1
WON 9-2 CASTILO DEL DIABLO Jan 4
WON 3-1 EDMUND KEAN Jan 7
NOW FOR A BANKER AT DONCASTER THIS AFTERNOON: He tries to land back-to-back naps, to make it three out of the last five, with a maximum-stakes banker at Doncaster this afternoon. He finished 2013 with 23 bankers up out of 28 for the year.
14.0 AND 10.5 PUNTS ON BETDAQ RACES AT KEMPTON TONIGHT: Doncaster also features his 17.0 outsider of the day but there are 14.0 and 10.5 offers selected on the Kempton Park card this evening, when four races are BETDAQ sponsored.
1.40 Doncaster Karinga Dancer, a 145-rated hurdler, who had the Gerry Feilden winner, Ifandbutwhynot, in third, when winning at Aintree in October, is back over the CD and running in the same conditions as his debut chase success a month ago.
The Old Vic nine-year-old Victor Hewgo, coming late to fences, was officially 19lb behind Karinga Dancer over hurdles and has a 282-day absence to overcome.
James Reveley usually rides Walkabout Creek, who has so far struggled to translate his form over the ‘sticks’ to the big fences, and Western Warhorse, by the in-vogue sire Westerner, could do with a longer trip. So Karinga Dancer is a banker.
2.00 Lingfield Several Flat jockeys do a double stint today, taking in afternoon rides at Lingfield and the evening session at Kempton Park. But it may be a bit of a pointer for a top jock to have just one at each.
Which one is special to Jamie Spencer, Modernism, 6.8 on BETDAQ this morning in this race at Lingfield, or Swehan in the opener on the BETDAQ-sponsored card at Kempton Park tonight?
The Lingfield race is the best at the meeting but is only a class 4, the milieu to which Modernism returns after a failed attempt at class 2, which would have completed his hat-trick.
By the same token, Miguel Grau has to step up from class 5 here after winning in that grade in a BETDAQ race at Kempton before Christmas.
Miguel Grau is said to be improving but that’s not the line suggested by Understory, who has met him twice.
Nine days earlier, Karam Albaari won in class 3 over today’s CD but the handicapper was not impressed and raised him only a pound.
2.45 Doncaster I’m expecting a comeback win for Glens Boy, having just his ninth race under Rules and only his second for Jonjo O’Neill.
It would be a fitting tribute this week to the great Terry Biddlecombe (read Brough Scott’s characterful story on the Racing Post website).
Terry and his partner, Henrietta Knight, trained this horse to beat a Grimthorpe winner and a Welsh Grand National hero to take the Harwell Trophy at Newbury two years ago over today’s trip and in similar conditions.
Still 5lb higher, but dropped a grade for the first time since, he looked as if his reappearance race at Leicester the day after Boxing Day would set him up for this.
Ifyousayso and Deciding Moment after a long break (bounce factor?) have been punished 8lb and 7lb for novice wins and Categorical is also high in the weights but Triangular has won after a break before and Honest John has never run a bad race at Doncaster.
Honest John’s jockey today, Jason Maguire, is 50% from four rides for Louth trainer Steve Gollings in the last five seasons and I took 8.2 Glens Boy and 17.0 Honest John on BETDAQ this morning.
3.50 Doncaster After two starts at 100-1, there was money down to 7-1 for Mumbles Bay on better ground at Ffos Las in the summer.
By Oscar out of a daughter of Supreme Leader, this bumper-placed (twice) will relish the step back up in trip over hurdles. First-time visors suggest connections want there money back today.
And with the stable suddenly hitting form with winners at Chepstow and Fakenham at the turn of the year, the 10.5 on BETDAQ is worth a dabble win and place.
‘Bay’ travels all the way from Welsh Wales, despite being out of the handicap. Let’s hope this isn’t just a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises. It’s a betting fallacy for the punter to see what he wants to see and disregard the rest.
4.10 Kempton Park (Betdaq – The Sports Betting Exchange -Handicap) Swehan (8.2 on BETDAQ as I write) has had Jamie Spencer up only once and raced over 10f only once, same race same day. The result was a win at Lingfield in November, when they turned over the favourite despite giving him weight, with the third horse home a winner since at Southwell.
Apart from Spenny, another connection with the 2.00 at Lingfield today is that Lady Lunchalot was stopped in her hat-trick bid when raised a grade from class 6 and beaten by Miguel Grau at Kempton in that BETDAQ race I mentioned then. The seven-years-old yardstick, Understory, was third.
A further connection is that Modernism, Spencer’s ride in the Lingfield race, easily beat Red Dragon, giving him weight at Wolverhampton.
Mr Red Clubs has crashed 24lb down the handicap this year and is a winner waiting to happen, but he’s not well drawn (again!) and has needed more like a mile in the past.
Perfect Cracker’s AW wins are here, but again they are 7f-1m, though he did win over today’s trip on turf in the Spring.
4.40 Kempton Park (£500 Free Bets At Betdaq Handicap) Bapak Bangsawan has held his form better after a win than has Expose, and Bapak is the more consistent.
Blessington (a 2.6 offer on BETDAQ over my cornflakes) has been in the firing line over further and maybe this drop back to the minimum will help. John Gosden is 122 with his runners in the new year. Needs some pace on, or must set it himself.
Caspian Prince, a 5f winner on soft, is tried tongue-tied, and cheekpieces are on Pabusar (holds Sulis Minerva on their form here in a BETDAQ race last month). He has plumetted in the handicap but won only once from 32 starts.
This is the first time that Trader Jack has dropped below class 2 (12 races) and class 3 (five races) since winning his maiden in November 2011.
But what on earth is he doing in a 5f sprint? In his only start at Kempton, he was narrowly beaten over 11f in the summer of 2012. This is the coup of the year so far, or sheer desperation.
6.40 Kempton Park (Winners Are Welcome At Betdaq Fillies’ Handicap) Adam Kirby has ridden 337 AW winners and Perfect Haven could be another, though we are asking her to put back-to-back wins together from a not very attractive draw.
The lightly-raced Welsh Sunrise was second to her at Lingfield and they are weighted to dead-heat now, with the fourth, Magical Rose, breathing down their necks.
Luke Morris (367 AW wins) has every chance on Ivory’s Princess. Byroness is now below her winning mark here just under a year ago. So, too, Russian Ice (14.0 on BETDAQ), from a yard which has always done well at Kempton.
7.10 Kempton Park (Betdaq 1st UK Commission Free Amateur Riders’ Handicap) Mawaakef might win this if he could repeat his Lingfield December third to Modernstone, who was just outrun by my nap, Castilo Del Diablo, in a class 2 there on Saturday.
Echo Brava has put back-to-back wins together before and has an ace partner in Serena Brotherton. Odin goes for a hat-trick under former amateur AW champ, Simon Walker, and the Nicholls fun horse, Silsol, cannot be left out.
