QUESTIONS FOR DAY 2 GOODWOOD? Can Sing A Song beat himself? Can Two Tribes lead man go to war? Is Field Of Gold horse of the year? Can Daqman land a bull’s-eye bet?
TOMORROW: Nassau Stakes day with another big handicap outsider
NOVELISTA SET TO LEAD
⭕ 1.20 Goodwood: Third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh behind Sing Us A Song at Sandown in April (1m 2f) have all won since.
But Song himself was fractious at the start and slowly away when his hat-trick bid failed, stepped up to 1m 4f at Royal Ascot (9th of 19 to Merchant, with Omni Man, short of room, fifth).
Can you forgive him or would you prefer Ralph Beckett stablemate, Cape Breton, who has scored from 1m to 1m 4f? Not for me; the form of his small-field Bibury Cup win at Salisbury has not worked out.
Epsom scorer Sudu (class 4) repeatedly failed to get a run at Newbury in June, before going seven lengths clear when dropped in grade at Epsom.
Novelista, placed twice over 1m 6f, suggests a reserve of stamina to take on this field and keep up the momentum on the Goodwood hill in the way the Johnston stable likes to dominate races here.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 7.5 each of two Omni Man and Novelista.
EXPECT MOORE OF TABITI
⭕ 1.55 Goodwood: Low numbers in the stalls have won nine out of 10 of this 7f Group 3 for fillies and mares.
Tabiti (out of 7) has a second champion riding her, Ryan Moore taking over from Colin Keane, who led the far side group off top weight in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot (1m). BETDAQ 5.4 taken
⭕ 4.55 Goodwood: The same 7f, the same bias to low numbers (seven winners out of eight from single-figure stalls) but this one’s a handicap.
The last two winners are back: Rhoscolyn (2023 out of gate 4) is up 8lb; Blue Prince (2024 out of 5) is up just a pound but 10lb worse off with runner-up Billyjoh (but that one is not now well drawn in 14).
The third home, Racingbreaks Ryder (out of 20), also returns today but in stall 13 and 4lb higher.
Leadman’s July Course win the last day looks strong, considering the second horse home was on a hat-trick and the third, Two Tribes, went to war on King Geoge day and won the International. BETDAQ 7.4.
GOLD STAR STONE CLEAR
⭕ 3.05 Goodwood (Sussex Stakes) The £600k to the winner one-mile Group 1 could contain England’s horse of the year, Field Of Gold, who currently edges it over the improving filly, King George runner-up Kalpana, now Arc favourite.
Ireland has Lambourn, Minnie Hauk and newly-arrived Cup kid, Scandinavia (all three Ballydoyle) but with Calandagan now in front for the French.
Field Of Gold is such dynamite at three that he’s following the Frankel tradition of staying at a mile but will step up in trip next year as a four-year-old.
The Irish Guineas and St James’s Palace winner is 126 to 120 clear top-rated over Rosallion today but gets 8lb weight for age, so literally a stone in front.
Another 7lb behind is Henri Matisse for Ballydolyle. Though beaten by Field of Gold in Ireland, he won the French Guineas and is a million-pound winner, with the Breeders Cup Juvenile under his belt from last autumn.
HOMAGE TO PATAGONIA..
⭕ 3.45 Goodwood Ralph Beckett has won this 1m 2f fillies’ handicap three times in five years, and his Power Of Destiny was beaten only a head last year and only a short-neck in the Winter Oaks in January.
Ascot maiden winner Wonder Star has been given more time since attempting black type in a Listed in the Spring.
Patagonia Girl’s June double squeezed her into the bottom of this handicap. The Australia filly was impressive at Chester when she beat Lady Chartwell.
Lady Chartwell didn’t get much room at Chester and is 6lb better off now, but Patagonia Girl went clear in the final stages.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 7.8 Wonder Star, 18 Power Of Destiny, 22 Patagonia Girl
