It’s all change at the top. In the first full post-pandemic season, Charlie Appleby and William Haggas are leading trainers so far, closely followed by Andrew Balding and Team Johnston.
Champions in the last four full seasons (2016-19), John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien are currently out of the first five; in fact, O’Brien is 11th.
In 2018, there were 25 trainers who made more than a million and before the pandemic, we were predicting ‘who will be first to £10m?’ after three sensational seasons between 2016 and 2018.
2016: Aidan O’Brien £8m plus.
2017: Aidan O’Brien £8m plus; John Gosden £6m plus
2018: John Gosden £8.5m, Aidan O’Brien £6m plus.
2019: John Gosden £8m, Aidan O’Brien £7.5m.
Gosden was champion with £3m in the depleted 2020 season and Appleby top dog last year with £5m.
Even a burgeoning Karl Burke (845k) is currently ahead of John and Thady Gosden (£836k) in the 2022 list, and Aidan O’Brien is slumped in 11th place on £441k. The rising star is George Boughey (£682k).
The leaders for prizemoney won are Charlie Appleby £1.2m, William Haggas £1.8m, Andrew Balding £983k, and Charlie and Mark Johnston £925k. But will any of them stay in the front rank?

IT COULD BE A WALK IN THE PARK
⭕ 2.50 Hamilton Forecast soft (officially good to soft this morning with showers expected), which will suit Inver Park, one of six rides for William Buick and looking to book his place in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
That being considered, George Boughey’s gelding looked a good bet here at 9-10 (1.91) in the BETDAQ offers market.
Inver Park has been out of the first four only once in 13 starts, and – by the soft-ground sire, Pivotal – is 113 over 6f since his debut when the ground has been in his favour.
Carries a 5lb penalty for winning at Windsor nine days back but drops down a grade from class 3. He was a winner at Ascot last May.
Shark Two One has not been easy to win with. Improved for blinkers the last day at Ripon and also likes it soft.
Tipperary Tiger completes a trio of four-year-olds, and he is 3-10 since he started wearing a visor. One of them was on soft over 7f, so should make an impression at the business end of the race up the long Hamilton straight.
Global Humour is 311 at Hamilton between 5f and 7f, Has never won anywhere above 70, so Jim Goldie is claiming off him.
Nearly A Gonna has been thumped 8lb for winning first run back but gets under the radar with just a penalty today. Even so, he’s never won this high.
YANIFER YARD EXCELS IN SPRING
⭕ 3.10 Beverley (Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Handicap) Though low numbers are favoured by the right-hand bend, a good break at the start can nullify that.
So the usual suspects are horses with early pace from stalls 4, 5 and 6, and the race often develops down the middle.
Ron O (out of 5) is often slow away and is 0-12, while Temper Trap (4) is from a yard that’s run 100 horses for only four hits in the last 15 days. Thrave is 1-26.
So I’m looking a bit further over to Yanifer (7), who landed a hat-trick over 7f last summer and is running short of a mile for the first time since.
Has run well the last twice this year, and should be at peak now for a trainer in form, Harriet Bethell, who excels with her string in May-June (43% strike rate).
Proud Archi has won over the Beverley CD four times but he’s a come-from-behind horse who will need to have kept his ability well if he is to win at the age of eight.

⭕ 5.20 Beverley Bankawi was one of the overnight punts, in to 6-1with bookmakers but still 9.0 this morning on BETDAQ.
Made all the running here last June and now 2lb lower. Likes to front-run and Joanna Mason’s job is to get across from stall 10; Bankawi will do the rest.
⭕ 6.55 Ripon In BETDAQ offers, 10 would win you 9, maybe more, about Tamarama, who should go forward now she’s had her head in front at Beverley.
Tom Marquand rides a filly who could well have been 2-2 but, here at Ripon, came up against one of William Haggas’s who went on to win in a better grade. Tamarama led at several stages of the race, and they will know how to ride her now.
