DAQMAN TARGETS A NATIONAL HAT-TRICK AFTER 6-1 AND 7-1 HITS: Today Daqman checks out the probables for the Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow on Saturday, after top-spotting two National winners last week, with Who’s In The Box (Lincolnshire National, WON 7-1) and Seaston Spirit (Sussex National, WON 6-1). A final judgement for BETDAQ value will be made on Saturday itself.
LADBROKES KEY TO CORAL NATIONAL
⭕ 2.50 Chepstow, Saturday (Coral Welsh Grand National) The stats say that you usually want young 3m-plus horses of nine or under, carrying 11st or less.
1 THE HOLLOW GINGE Has seemingly had a checkered career but his returns in the last two years on soft-heavy only are 112301, still standing, when outside Graded company, and he stayed on well to be fourth in the Grade-3 Ladbrokes Trophy, though the ground was against him.
2 SPRINGFIELD FOX Looked a staying star in the making when he made light of the mud in a 17-lengths romp at Exeter, and was back on track in a hurdles spin the last day after an unlucky shambles of a round in the amateurs’ NH Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
3 CHRISTMAS IN APRIL Thee wins out of four, including the Sussex National and Devon National in January-February, and Southern National runner-up recently, back from a break.
His trainer won the Welsh National in 2016 with a six-year-old of potential, Native River, who would go on to Cheltenham Gold Cup glory.
4 SECRET REPRIEVE The youngster of the field, he goes up another 8lb after this, carrying just a 4lb penalty today for slamming The Two Amigos 12 lengths earlier this month here at Chepstow in the Coral Welsh Grand National Trial (Bobo Mac a well-beaten third, Captain Drake well back in fifth).
5 PRIME VENTURE Stablemate of Secret Reprieve, he comes out best of last year’s result, fourth staying on, 10lb better for two-and-a-half lengths with the runner-up Truckers Lodge. A late developer, he returned to form at Sedgefield in November.
6 TRUCKERS LODGE Second in last year’s race, getting 19lb from the third horse, Yala Enki, who now gives only 7lb. He is also 12lb worse in with the fourth, Prime Venture. See The Two Amigos.
Won the Midlands Grand National in March by 18 lengths from Captain Drake and Joe Farrell.
7 YALA ENKI Yala Enki was runner-up to Ramses De Teillee at Cheltenham in November when Big River was third and, on that running, is more than a stone better with the winner and 10lb with the third, though he beat that one 35 lengths. See Truckers Lodge and Vieux Lion Rouge.
CLOUDY GLEN The 13-lengths winner of the Southern National at Fontwell in November from dual country-National winner Christmas In April. Revised weights puts them more or less level pegging.
RAMSES DE TEILLEE Won 3m 3f+ at Cheltenham in November, shortheading Yala Enki (given a pound as an equaliser) with Big River remote third and Captain Drake pulled up. See Vieux Lion Rouge.
VIEUX LION ROUGE Now aged 12 and future mark will be his highest for almost three years after taking the Becher Chase last month for the second time, with Callipso Collonges remote fourth, Joe Farrell sixth, Ramses De Teillee seventh, Yala Enki fell.
But he gets in here with just a 4lb penalty, so 8lb under the radar, which is therefore reckoned his last chance of a big pot.
THE TWO AMIGOS Fifth in the last running of this Welsh National and now 16lb better for around eight lengths with runner-up Truckers Lodge.
But, as a front-runner who faded over the last two that day, he now has bridesmaid form figures over fences of 304232 since back-to-back wins, including the Sussex National, in 2018-19. See Secret Reprieve.
DOMINATEUR won here at Chepstow back to back a year or so ago. Has been beaten around 90 lengths off higher marks in three races since, but can go well fresh and loves deep ground
LORD DU MESNIL Landed a hat-trick in late autumn of 2019, which included the Tommy Whittle (by 13 lengths over Callipso Collonges) at Haydock, where he was also second in the Grand National Trial last February. Overall 30lb rise will be hard to handle.
JOE FARRELL Not won since 2018 Scottish National but led for a long way in the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter in March: aged 12 now but more than a stone better off with the winner, Truckers Lodge. See Vieux Lion Rouge.
CAPTAIN DRAKE see Secret Reprieve, Ramses De Teillee and Truckers Lodge
DIDERO VALLIS Has twice run in the Grand Sefton, and was earlier fifth in the Stable Plate at Cheltenham (2019) but winning form is around 2m 4f in late 2018.
BOBO MAC Bridesmaid returns (20223) after 10lb hike for winning at Ludlow in November, 2019. See Secret Reprieve.
BIG RIVER Fifth Scottish National, then brought down when going easily in Scottish Borders National 2019 before fifth again in the Ultima at Cheltenham. See Ramses De Teillee.
CALIPSO COLLONGES Winner at Uttoxeter (2m 4f) on New Year’s Eve 2018. See Lord Du Mesnil and Vieux Lion Rouge.
BOY TO BOSS THEM
⭕ 5.10 Kempton Nortonthorpe Boy is out again quickly and the Phil McEntee trained runner might be able to defy his statutory 6lb penalty for his win at Wolverhampton where he appreciated the step back up to seven furlongs.
It looked a better contest that this one and he should account for Dubai Tigress, Decadent and Rainbow Sign who all renew rivalry having run over course and distance in December in a messy race that was won by an 80/1 shot and then form looks moderate to say the least.
SWERVING ESTEEM AFTER 471 DAYS
⭕ 5.45 Kempton The percentage call for me has to be with Tampere for David Simcock. The filly has been running consistently well and brings consistency to the table in a field full of question marks.
Not least of which Great Esteem who is having his first start for 471 days having joined Archie Watson from Charlie Appleby. He was last seen when a beaten 1/2 favourite (by six lengths) at Yarmouth. He remains progressive but that’s on the assumption he can move forwards after a lengthy break and the reality is probably that he will need this. He heads the market as I write and it’s too much of a risk on the evidence in front of me.
Diamond Gait makes her flat debut at the age of eight and isn’t totally out of it on her jumps form but I would have preferred her chance if she had run in an AW bumper just so I knew that ‘surface’ box was ticked.
WARNING: MARCO HAS SCORED 6-9
⭕ 7.15 Kempton Marco Ghiani, who has scored 6-9 in the five days of the new year, has one booked ride today, Global Warning.
Global Warning won just four days earlier, giving Ghiani 7-11 in the fortnight, and 1-2 for Newmarket trainer Chris Dwyer.
It was Global Warning’s first race over 6f and his first for Dwyer after being switched from Ed Dunlop, who had run him over 7f and 1m.
The handicapper was impressed and hiked the winner 11lb for the future but he gets in under a 5lb penalty before that takes effect and, with Ghiani’s claim a huge bonus, is 11lb below his rating. I took 2.2 offers this morning.
The only other horse for money with the bookies overnight was A Sure Welcome, a winner at Lingfield before Christmas, who remains 11.0 on the BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE as I write.
DAQMAN’S BETS (all to win 10 points)
BET 2.6pts win NORTONTHORPE BOY (5.10 Kempton)
BET 4.0pts win TAMPERE (5.45 Kempton)
BET 8.3pts win (nap) GLOBAL WARNING 7.15 Kempton
